President Ernest Bai Koroma has on Wednesday opened two Books of Condolence at State House and Parliament respectively in honour and memory of the late Sierra Leone political legend, Dr. John Karefa Smart. The activities marked the beginning of a series of funeral rites ahead of the late mans State Burial at his home town of Rotifunk over the weekend.

A vigil was also held in his memory the same evening at the Miatta Conference hall were tributes were made by a variety of people from the wide spectrum of the Sierra Leone society.

In another development, Members of Parliament earlier in the day, Wednesday, on the grounds of Parliament, with the President and the Vice President in attendance, held a session to pay tribute to the late man.

The late man was former Member of Parliament and one-time Minister of Foreign Affairs and Leader and Presidential Candidate for the UNPP in the 1996 and 2002 Presidential elections. He was a member of the Independence Delegation to London in 1961 and since then played vital roles in the political development of Sierra Leone.

A number of MPs made emotional tributes on the late mans career and life style as a distinguished politician and a Medical practitioner.

Hon. Ansu Kai Kai of the SLPP described the late man as a political hero whose loss is a deep crater in the political landscape of the country.

He said he was a Nationalist and a Pan Africanist whose fight for liberation and freedom was not focused on his country alone, but the whole of Africa and countries of African descendants. He called for Sierra Leoneans to emulate the life of Dr. Karefa Smart as he lived a life of selfless service to country.

Principal of the Albert Academy, Albert Kawa, who spoke on behalf of the pupils and staff of his school, said Dr. Karefa Smart was a product of the Albert Academy noting that during his years there, he proved to a worthwhile student that made the school proud of his brilliant grades both at school and external examinations.

As Mr. Kawa spoke, the Albert Academy Brass Band played an undertone ballad which made the homily somber and emotional. He recalled the late mans marvelous yet to be broken academic record as a student of the Academy when in his GCE Ordinary Examination, he scored eight As noting that record still stands as a National Record.  He described his death as a great loss as he was model worth emulating by upcoming children of this country when one considers academic excellence and service to country for national development,

Mr. Kawa extended profound condolence to the bereaved and encouraged them to take heart. Dr. John Karefa Musellman Smart would be laid to rest on Sunday, 19th September 2010 in his home town of Rotifunk where he was born.
