A 19-seater mini-bus commonly referred to in Sierra Leone as ĎPoda-Podaí¬† in the early hours of Wednesday, 22nd¬†September 2010 was involved in a gruesome accident that eyewitnesses say was due to over speeding when it somersaulted over the Peace Bridge (Congo Cross Bridge) and landed on the roof tops of dwelling houses below the bridge.
According to eyewitnesses reports the vehicle that was loaded to capacity was on its way to the city centre from Congo Town when the driver lost control on approaching the bridge due to high speed. However, eyewitnesses reported that both the driver and his apprentice were lucky to have jumped out of the vehicle before it somersaulted with the passengers.
Reports furthered that the owner of the bus whose name was given as Mr. Hassan who materialized at the scene of accident later on, said the actual driver in charge of the van was nowhere to be seen that morning which according to him caused the apprentice to load and take off without permission.
However, reports say none of the passengers lost their lives though some sustained serious injuries. They are currently responding to treatment at the Connaught Hospital, while the driver and his mate are helping the police in their investigations.
