The Seven Trustees
A little publicised but highly successful charitable venture by seven Sierra Leoneans in Great Britain will this weekend once again see scores of people take part in an annual event designed to help raise funds for the selfless, charitable work that these seven patriots have been engaged in within Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone War Trust for Children (SLWT) was formed in April 1999, by seven Sierra Leoneans, living and working in the UK. This was in response to the atrocities committed against children in Sierra Leone, during the country's ten year civil war.

The Trustees were and still are committed to improving the welfare of war-affected children and work for the Trust on a voluntary basis.

This weekend, once again as for the past several years, the SLWT will be carrying out their seventh Fundraising Run; the Runs dubbed as 5KM FUN RUNs have always been carried out in an atmosphere of fun whilst successfully helping to raise thousands of pounds for the admirable work of the SLWT.

Trustee Yvonne
The founders of SLWT developed a unique manner of running their charity which ensured that their efforts would have a direct, effective and tangible impact on those young lives with as minimal administrative costs as possible.

According to the founders, they "did not want to create an administrative machinery that would be costly to run" as they realised this would "divert funds to office, transport, salary etc costs" and away from impacting the targeted youths and children on the ground in Sierra Leone.

As a solution to minimise administrative costs, SLWT therefore partners with existing credible Sierra Leonean organisations which already have the logistics and administrative machinery in place.  That way SLWT can channel its funds directly to its projects. A lot of time and energy are put in to make the work of the SLWT a success but in all of this, SLWTs trustees serve the organisation on a purely voluntary basis. All projects are community led and SLWT provides financial and technical support.

To learn more about the fascinating things that the SLWT has been doing all these years, please visit the following website referenced below and learn what seven determined minds can do in a collaborative, non-paid effort to give back to their home country Sierra Leone through empowerment of the disadvantaged Sierra Leonean citizens. Their efforts are truly fascinating and worthy of emulation!

It's really fun to run and raise cash...

Dear All

If you have already registered to take part in our 5KM FUN RUN we would like to thank you again. If you have not yet registered then please do so now! The run is at Battersea Park on Sunday 26th September 2010 at 2pm.

Don't miss out on this excellent event! It's a great opportunity to support the work of SLWT and to have lots of fun at the same time. All ages and abilities are welcome and you can walk if that's what it will take to get you to join us! Click here to register. Registration at Battersea Park on the day is from 12noon.

Our 5KM run is our main fundraising event so we would like to encourage you to create your own Justgiving fundraising page.

This is a very quick and easy way to make your friends and family aware of and contribute to your efforts. To create your own fundraising web page for this event simply go to where you create an account or use an existing one (if you have raised money through before), create your fundraising page and send it to your friends and family. Our aim is to raise 30,000 this year so we need all the help we can get!

Your support will enable us to continue to make a difference to the lives of children and young people in Sierra Leone. So please come and run (or walk) with us on Sunday 26th September.

For more information about our work, please visit our website at

With thanks,
The SLWT 5km Fun Run Team!
