Two young Sierra Leoneans to attend Global Summit

 

Two young female Sierra Leoneans have been selected among many others in the world to attend global summit in London. Jenneh Marion Sama and Isha Kabba would spend a week to share best practices in the areas of human right, climate change, poverty reduction, education, HIV/AIDS and social entrepreneurship with colleagues from other parts of the world. The global youth submit according to reports is part of the British Council Global Change Markers initiatives.


Rural Agricultural Project helps Local Farmers


Reports have it that Rural Agricultural Project is creating more impacts in the lives of rural farmers in Kenema, Kono , Kailahun and Koinadugu Districts of Sierra Leone. The project aims to uncover challenges in providing services to farmers with value enhancement and create marketing links to trade locally and internationally. The project reports say has helped many rural farming groups to have rice huller or store and many other opportunities including training for farmers.

 

India Trains Sierra Leone Solar Grandmothers


Local tabloids say seven Sierra Leonean women have returned home after a six-month training programme on solar electrification. Reports say this is the third time Sierra Leonean barefoot solar grandmother engineers have been to India to be trained as solar electricians for their communities. The trainees were drawn from communities in the Bombali, Port Loko and Tonkolili Districts respectively.


Importers Blast ASYCUDA

 

Importers in Sierra Leone have reportedly described the newly introduced Automated System for Customers Data (AYSCUDA) as causing an unnecessary delay in the clearing of goods from at customs. Some importers who recently visited the Queen Elizabeth II Quay to clear their goods allegedly got frustrated with the cumbersome nature of the ASYCUDA process, and that they saw no difference from the previous manual system. However, AYCUDA Project Manager at NRA Raymond Kamara has reportedly disclosed that the system is in place and needs effective compliance. He is said to have accused some importers of preferring the illegal means of clearing their good instead of the using the correct procedures. 


CSWs to Form Association in Salone.


Local tabloids have alleged that Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) in Sierra Leone are planning to form an association to cater for their welfare. They are said to have held a meeting past Friday at a popular night club in Freetown where they reportedly agreed to form an interim body that would prepare a constitution for the proposed association. This according to reports will be followed by a formal launch of the association in the country with an elected executive.


Defence Chief to Down Size the Army


The newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has reportedly disclosed in Freetown that  he would  soon  down size the army from seventeen thousand five hundred to eight thousand five hundred personnel. According to reports, the process is an ongoing one that is based on normal retirement, medical grounds, death and of those seeking for international assignments. He also reportedly informed that they lacked the necessary logistics to cater for a very large number for which reason they were going to create room for a small number to enhance their capacity.


Police Investigate Traffic Warden

 

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently investigating an alleged violent behaviour of a Traffic Warden by the name of Foday Johnny against one Kormoh Gamanga all of No. 2 Pademaba Road in Freetown. According to reports, the Traffic Warden was under the influence of alcohol when he violently attacked Kormoh and caused him to sustain injuries all over his body.  Kormoh reports say was rescued by neighbours. Investigation is said to be in progress.
