The Sierra Leone National Commission on Small Arms on Saturday 25th September 2010 conducted a two-day validation workshop on national perception survey report on small arms at the Hill Valley Hotel in Freetown.

Making a keynote address State House Chief of Staff, Keifala Marah noted that the occasion marked another milestone in the fight against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the countryís untiring efforts to sustain peace, security and democratic governance, adding that the government was very mindful of the fact that without peace there would be no sustainable development.¬†¬† He said government has consolidated security machinery by putting mechanism in place to ensure that the negative mental and physical effects small arms and light weapons caused to us as a people do not repeat. ďSustainable peace and security cannot be attained without a robust strategy to control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in our region,Ē he opined.

Brig (Rtd) Leslie M. Lymon

For his part the Minister of Defense Paolo Conteh described the workshop as a step forward to in the right direction. He said if not rigorously controlled small arms and light weapon can pose serious threat to the peace and stability to the entire sub-region. ďThe most dangerous aspect of those weapons is that they are easy to smuggle from one place to another,Ē he informed, while commending the commission for doing a fantastic job in sensitizing stakeholders on the need to control small arms and light weapons, he assured of his continuous support in the fight.

SLeNSCSA Commissioner Brig (Rtd) Leslie M. Lymon gave an
acknowledgment to those individuals, institutions and organization for their material and moral support to the commission to reach such a stage. He specifically commended President Koroma and Vice President Sam-Sumana for their personal interest shown to the operations of the commission. He however, expressed the need more budget allocation for effective management operation of the commission.
