The Sierra Leone Roads Authority has compensated affected property owners in Kailahun to pave the way for the commencement of reconstruction on the first phase of the Kenema-Kailahun Road which has long been awaited by the people of that district. The ISU Engineering Company that won the contract, which is being spearheaded by a Korean national, has assembled equipment in preparation for construction of the road that is expected to last for thirty-six (36) months. Meanwhile, ISU Engineering workers are waiting the rainy season to subside before they start full scale work on the Kenema-Pendembu phase of the road project.

The contract was recently granted by the Government of Sierra Leone through the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) to kick-start reconstruction of the 186 kilometer road. The road forms an essential component of the economy as the district is being described as the bread basket of the country due to its agricultural and other potentials. The road when completed will serve not only the two districts of Kenema and Kailahun, but the country and the sub region as a whole in the area of trade and the movement of people. It will particularly make the marketing of their food products, cash crops and other commodities to the nearest markets easier and faster which will maximize more profits for them.

At the compensation payment ceremony in Segbwema in the Njaluahun Chiefdom, Kailahun District, the Paramount Chief and his subjects welcomed and thanked SLRA officials. Representing the SLRA were Lauretta Sawyerr, the Engineer-in-charge, James Lebbie, Management Accountant, Alfred Moseray, Valecious Tucker, Accountant, Dauda Sheriff, Senior Admin. Officer-Kenema region and Public Relations Officer Sorie Ibrahim Kanu.

PC Jajua told his people that the visit of the SLRA team in the district was to compensate them as a result of a recent verification exercise of those property owners affected by the road project. He pointed out that the payment concerns the people whose properties were destroyed during the survey. He said the houses that were marked X and their plantations are liable to receive their payments. He told his people that the exercise marked the second phase of the payment process and called on them to pay attention as their names as verified by the paying team.

Addressing his audience, the head of delegation, Mrs. Lauretta Sawyer informed the affected persons that the said payment was the second phase of the payment process and that the survey was undertaken two and half years ago by the SLRA Authorities from Freetown. She called on those who did not hear their names but whose houses or plantations were marked X to write a letter to the SLRA Administrative Office in Kenerna for the attention of Mr. Dauda Sheriff so that their complaints would be looked into. In Segbwema, 150 affected persons were paid ranging from plantation to dwelling houses and water wells in Njaluahun Chiefdom.

On 18 September, 2010 another 150 affected persons were paid in Jawi Chiefdom at the Daru Court Barray to the following villages- Baiima, Mobai Junction, Taway, Levuma Junction, Bombohun Junction, Manowulo and Taweh.

At the ceremony, the Paramount Chief of Jawei Chiefdom, Daru, PC Ngombukla Kallon and PC Cyril Foray Condor II of Upper Bambara Chiefdom, Pendembu on behalf of all the beneficiaries in the Kailahun District thanked the team for their commitment in leaving their busy schedules to fulfill their responsibility to the people of the community.

PC Kallon called on the SLRA and the government to do more in the area of road network in that part of the country as their chiefdoms and districts have been marginalized for far too long.

The high table

The two Paramount Chiefs however hailed President Koromas Agenda for Change and his vision for the socio-economic development of the country.
