19-year old sent to Prison


A 19-year old boy, Osman Dainkeh of 71 Ascension Town, Freetown has reportedly been remanded at the Pademba Road Maximum Prison by Magistrate Manuela Harding of the Freetown Magistrate Court No. 6. The accused according to report is standing trial for sexually abusing a 14- year old girl. The act is said to be contrary to Cap 31: Section 7 of the Prevention of the Child against cruelty in the Laws of Sierra Leone. The Defense lawyer is said to have made an application for bail but was refused by the Magistrate and the matter adjourned to 30th September 2010.

 

Biriwa Chief Addresses Special Court


Local tabloids say, the Paramount Chief of the Biriwa Chiefdom, Bombali District, PC Alhaji Dr. Madeseray Sherrff has asked the Special Court for Sierra Leone and other stakeholders to quickly intervene in the chieftaincy crisis in his chiefdom. According to reports, the chieftaincy dispute in that chiefdom is slowly degenerating into a tribal conflict because of the long delay by government to deliver justice. The Chief is reported to have made this request at Karina in the Biriwa Chiefdom where high-profiled Special Court officials were said to be present.

 

COMDO-Salone Helps the Needy


A Non-governmental organization, Community Development Organization-Sierra Leone (COMDO-SL) funded by a Sierra Leonean based in Germany, Mohamed Bah, has over the years assisted several needy Sierra Leoneans. The organization reports say, recently distributed second hand clothes to different communities in Makeni City and is currently taking some children off the streets to attend school.

 

Two DOT Centres Commissioned in Tonkolili


Two Direct Observed Treatment (DOT) Centers with a view to prevent the spread of Tuberculosis (TB) have been reportedly established in Mathoir in Yoni and Mabontor Kafe Simra Chiedoms in the Tonkolili District. The Programme Manager, National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, Dr. Alie Wurie advised the residents of the two communities to be steadfast and make use of this opportunity whenever they experience coughing for two weeks. The people were also taught on the causes, prevention and treatment of the disease.

 

50 Million Arms Floating in West Africa


Vice President Alhaji Sam Sumama has reportedly disclosed that an estimated one hundred million small arms and light weapons are currently in circulation and half of the number is found within West Africa. According to reports, VP Sumana postulated that women, children and many innocent people are dying from small arms and light weapons related violence.The Vice President is said to have made this disclosure during the commissioning of the head office of the Sierra Leone National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SLENCSA) in Freetown.

 

Sky Handling Partner Commissions Bus Service at Lungi Airport


The Sky Handling Partners handling ground operations at the Lungi International Airport is reported to have on Friday, 24th September 2010 commissioned a new bus service for conveying passengers and luggage to and from aircrafts in the airport.According to report, this is expected to improve service delivery as passengers at the Lungi International Airport now have an easy and luxurious ride to and from the aircrafts.The Minister of Transport and Aviation, Capt. Allieu Pat Sowe is reported to have said that the bus would be responsible for transporting passengers from the runway to the tower.

 

YDM Targets Slum Dwellers


The Youth Development Movement (YDM) over the weekend launched the Slum Dwellers Development Project at the Palmronkoh Community Primary School, Calaba Town, East of Freetown. This project reports say, was initiated by Comic Relief to promote development in the Calaba Town Community and its environs. The Executive Director of YDM, David A. Yambasu is reported to have said that the project was meant for the poor and vulnerable in the community as it seeks to eradicate poverty and create sustained livelihoods for the people.
