Parliament on Monday, 27th September 2010 has approved another set of five Presidential nominees for various positions within government’s enterprises and institutions. This follows recommendations made by the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Appointment and Public Accounts.
The nominees includes: Mohamed Jabbie as Board Member to represent the Eastern Province in the National Youth Commission (NYC), Lusane Koroma to represent the Southern Province in the NYC Board, Ibrahim S. Jalloh to represent the Northern Province in the NYC Board, AIG Al-Sheik Kamara as police representative in the NASSIT Board and Ms. Estha Panda as Board member in the Roads Maintenance Fund Administration.
Speaking in the wall of Parliament, Honorable Eric Koedoyoma of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) who seconded the motion of the Committee said it is always their responsibility as members of parliament on the Committee of Appointment to approve presidential nominees who are suitable for their respective nominated positions. He therefore admonished the nominees to demonstrate high sense of responsibility in their respective posts and to always report on their stewardships to Parliament on an annual basis. He said the nominees should consider themselves lucky and privileged to be nominated by the President. He therefore encouraged them to be selfless and to represent the interest of the nation honestly and diligently. He called on the representatives in the NYC to use the opportunity given to them to ensure the provision of jobs for the youths and ensure that women and disables are adequately catered for.
To the NASSIT representative, the MP urged him to use his police background and experience properly in the board to ensure sanity and development.
The Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Suffian Kargbo of the All People’s Congress (APC) party assured the nominees of the support of Parliament and informed that they would on a timely basis be called upon by the Committee for an evaluation of their stewardship.
He called on the NYC representatives to always be neutral and consider the interest of youths whom they represent as paramount to all other considerations. He urged the representative to the Road Maintenance Fund Administration to ensure that funds collected for road maintenance works are used judiciously.
