Three people, Mariama Bangura, Ishmael Bangura and Pastor Sesay met their untimely deaths last Saturday, 2nd October 2010 in a gruesome road accident along the Freetown/Makeni highway when the Peugeot car they were traveling in ran into a stationed mini van loaded with charcoal.
According to eyewitness reports, the driver of the Peugeot car with registration number ADS 233 departing from Makeni Northern Sierra Leone for Freetown in the early hours of Saturday, lost control after developing a mechanical failure and ran into the stationed mini van with registration number AWA 890 close to a village located few miles to Masiaka in the Port Loko District.
According to reports, the Peugeot car was overloaded with twelve passengers including the driver; four were seated at the back another four in the middle and two in the front passenger’s seat and one sitting next to the driver on the drivers seat.
Reports further explained that the driver of the mini bus, one Joseph Thoronka had parked his bus on the right side of the road towards Makeni and went into the nearby bush to urinate leaving the car’s fog lights on. Eye witnesses say this may have affected the vision of the Peugeot driver, identified as Tommy since it was still dark and foggy and had lost control and hit the minibus resulting in the deaths of the three passengers while the rest sustained severe injuries.
Tommy, the Peugeot driver is reported to have taken to his heels by jumping out of the car before it hits the mini bus. All the injured passengers where rushed to the Masiaka health centre for urgent medical attention.
Eyewitnesses commented that the accident was to a large extent due to over speeding, which is said to be the order of the day with small cars plying that highway.
