Sierra Leoneans were last Saturday thrilled with excitement when an amphibious bus, the Salma ‘Watabus’ took off on a test ride from the Government Wharf offshore in Freetown and on to the sea with the Minister of Trade and Industry, David Carew and other important personalities on board.

Prior to the inaugural ride of the amphibious buses, the proprietor, Modupe Taylor-Pearce Jnr. said the venture to bring this kind of development was part of President Koroma’s Agenda for Change which demands private sector to come onboard to compliment government’s efforts to develop Sierra Leone .

The amphibious buses he disclosed were very strong, safe, and steady and secure on both land and water. “The vehicles are durable for all weathers and are the type used by soldiers to transport war materials through land and sea in 1944,” he disclosed. Mr. Taylor-Pearce noted that the vehicles were brought in order to ease the difficulties in transportation from Lungi to Freetown and to other places and that it focuses on encouraging more investors and tourists who wish to come on tour to Sierra Leone . He maintained that Sierra Leone has one of the best beaches in the world but can only attract foreign investors and tourists through the efforts of the country’s own citizens. He informed that the buses will start full operations from the Lungi International Airport to Freetown Government Wharf starting Friday, 8th October 2010 onwards. He said tickets can be bought at the Lungi Airport and the Government Wharf through Zap, Splash and cash purchases.

In his statement, the Minister of Trade and Industry, David Carew commended the proprietor and his wife for undertaking the investment in their country, maintaining that the venture is what government is expecting of its citizens at home and abroad. He called on all Sierra Leoneans to support the venture and or to emulate “this fine and exemplary example of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor-Pearce,” adding that Sierra Leone can only be developed by Sierra Leoneans with foreigners merely playing complimentary roles.
