Freetown, September 28th 2010 - Standard Chartered Bank has formally handed over a newly constructed 3 classroom block complex, to the Government and the Quarry Community, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility in Sierra Leone. Being ‘Here for good’ through our sustainable approach to business and society, we are constantly challenging ourselves as to how we can contribute to our markets in a distinctive way. Hence our move towards a longer-term community strategy, which is sustainable and measurable in terms of benefit to the community.

The classroom block complex which comprises of the Head Teacher’s office, a store, 3 big classrooms and a 3 compartment toilet is a Le350million initiative aimed at  fulfilling our desire to assist our local communities; to help alleviate poverty and to truly demonstrate we are ‘Here for good’ in Sierra Leone.

New Classroom Block Complex

The Bank will like to thank the Ministry of Lands Housing & Country Planning, The Ministry of Education Youth & Sports and the Freetown City Council, who were major stakeholders in the project, aimed at ensuring children in the Quarry Community not only have a right to education but also have a right to a conducive learning environment, to foster academic excellence.

“Standard Chartered Bank being ‘Here for good’ in Sierra Leone sums up our commitment; to developing deep relationships with our clients and customers, our values, our conduct and focus on sustainability, and our longevity, heritage and continued strong performance in Sierra Leone,” said , Alex Kamara, Chairman Board of Directors.  “We will continue to partner the government and the regulator in driving the socio-economic environment; continuing to use our international expertise and capabilities to introduce new, innovative products and services into this market, to support the rapid sophistication of the financial services sector and the wider economy.”

Alex Kamara, Chairman of the Board making a Statement

The Section Chief of the Quarry Community and Dr. Lansana Nyallay, Deputy Minister of Education Youth & Sports also made statements at the event which was climaxed by the Key-note address and the Tape Cutting Ceremony, performed by Dr. Dennis Sandy, Minister of Lands Housing & Country Planning.

Building a sustainable business is an integral part of Standard Chartered’s long-term strategy to enhance shareholder’s value. We are determined to lead by example in the markets were we operate, and as well as finding ways to drive economic growth; we also want to help protect the environment and to have positive impact on the societies where we live and work.

The construction of the classroom block complex for the Quarry Community Primary School is another example of Standard Chartered Bank’s commitment to building a sustainable business and further strengthens our Brand promise as being ‘Here for good’ in Sierra Leone.”
