Man Remanded for Murder

Magistrate J O. Wellington of Freetown Magistrate Court No 2 on Monday 4th October 2010 sent a-35-year old Mohamed Conteh on remand for alleged murder. According to reports, it was alleged that the accused on 18 September, 2010 at Ghana Field by Kissy Bye Pass Road in the east end of Freetown murdered  one Yeku Mansaray of the same address. The matter was adjourned to next week while the accused continues to be on remand at the Pademba Road Prison due to the severity of the offence.


Storm Destroys 50 Houses in Kono

 

Reports filtering in from Kono District allege that a heavy storm has destroyed fifty houses, leaving eight people critically injured at Gondomaja Village in the Nimikoro Chiefdom last Friday night. The heavy tornado which reportedly lasted for over ten minutes rendered over 160 people homeless, destroying food crops and other property worth millions of Leones. Victims of the tragedy are said to have kindly asked the government and humanitarian organizations to come to their aid.


Hiccups in the Metropolitan Police Force

 

Reports have alleged that there is currently a sour relationship between serving personnel of the Metropolitan Police Force and the Management of the Freetown City Council (FCC) over what the latter described as too much interference into the day-to-day operations of the council. It is reportedly alleged that officials of FCC are always in the habit of obstructing the metropolitan police when effecting arrest. According to reports, FCC officials use their influence to force personnel to compromise matters.


Miss Sierra Leone 2010 off to China

 

Sierra Leone’s representative to this year’s Miss World Annual Premier Beauty Pageant, Neyorlan Melrose Williams over the weekend left Freetown to participate in the 60th Miss World Beauty Pageant in Beijing, China.  The beauty queen has reportedly heaped praises on the Commium Commercial Director in Sierra Leone, Mr. Joe Amara Bsangali, the Executive Director of Madam Yoko Entertainment and many other individuals for sponsoring Sierra Leone’s participation.


Benguema Barracks gets Multi-Purpose Sports Complex


Local tabloids say the Minister of Defence, Hon. Paolo Conteh last Friday laid the foundation stone of a Multi-purpose sports complex at the Benguema Army Barracks in the Western Rural District of Sierra Leone. According to reports, the project is being funded by private institutions with its implementation put in the hands of the Soldiers. The Minister is said to have appealed to the project manger to ensure that the complex accommodates a gymnasium, a tennis lawn, volley ball and basket ball courts.


Boat Owners get New President


Mohamed Bangura aka 555 has over the weekend been elected as the new president of the Sierra Leone United Boat Owners’ Association (SLUBOA).  The election was reportedly done in a free and fair atmosphere at the various polling centres at Susan’s Bay in Freetown, Targrin in Lungi, Tombo whalla, Kasiri, Rokuprr, Plantain Island, Gbangbatoke, Bonthe and Gbondapaie in the south. According to reports 216 members voted in the election.


Advocacy Group Sensitizes Grafton Community

 

A Non-Governmental Organization, ‘Sabi you Right Advocacy Group,’ recently engaged community stakeholders from the Kossoh Town, Hastings and Grafton communities on their rights and responsibilities as citizens at Grafton Village in Western Rural District. According to reports the organization which was formed in 2005 aims at mitigating human rights abuses ranging from rape to other forms of domestic violence. In collaboration with Amnesty International, the organization is said to have made it possible for many residents to understand their rights tom maintain peaceful co-existence amongst families.


Moyamba TBAs Cry Foul


Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in the Gondama Village, Kongbora Chiefdom in Mayamba District have reportedly raised concern for failure of authorities concerned to give them stipends from funds allocated by the government through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development to various government hospitals in the country for Traditional Birth Attendants as part of the understanding for training and certifying them. They allege that their counterparts in the Northern Province and the Western Area have already started receiving their own stipends. They now reportedly call on government to immediately come to their aid since they can no longer peddle the trade as before.
