The six selected Sierra Leonean ladies, two of whom will subsequently represent Sierra Leone in this year’s ECOWAS Peace Pageant on Wednesday, 6th October 2010 paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Richard Conteh at his office in Freetown. Dr. Conteh who also doubles as the ECOWAS Country Representative was full with zest and enthusiasm to receive the pretty contestants.
Welcoming them, he assured the contestants of Government’s moral and institutional support through his Ministry for a successful outcome of the event scheduled to hold on 13th November 2010.
He encouraged the contestants to be self-confident and as well to be proud as host contestants noting that the event is good for the country as it is an opportunity to showcase the peace, tranquility and business opportunities existing in the country following the end of the war in 2000.
He expressed hope with assured confidence that the winner would come from Sierra Leone while describing the six as “magnificent handiwork of God Almighty.”
He urged the contestants to focus their campaign messages on the issue of small arms and light weapons, which he noted have devastated the sub region as tools for killing and the perpetration of horrendous atrocities against the human and material resources of the sub region. He also urged them to visit the newly commissioned office of the Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons in order to familiarize with its mandate and the state of these weapons of war and their effects on the sub region.
The six contestants for the Sierra Leone ticket are: Sarah Bangura of the International Secondary School, Jebbeh Kamara-Fourah, Margaret Murray, from Fourah Bay College (FBC), and Lucy Peeller, Mellisa Sesay, Stella Bangura all from the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM).
Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Peace Pageant will be officially launched today, Thursday, 7th October 2010 at the Family Kingdom to be climaxed by an audition that will eventually come out with the two national finalists for the grand showdown on November 13th 2010.
