Wealth Builders Boss Granted Bail


Local tabloids say, Magistrate J O Wellington of the Freetown Magistrate Court No. 2 on Thursday 7th September 2010 granted Le 700 million self bail to Peter A. Johnson, a Nigerian investor running Wealth Builders, a financial institution currently in controversy. The accused was recently apprehended by the Sierra Leone Police for running an illegal business.  Wealth Builders was operating illegal banking system in the country for which the Bank of Sierra Leone took them to the courts.  In addition to the seizure of his passport as part of the conditions of the bail bond, Peter Johnson is reported to have been strict instruction to be reporting at the Criminal Investigation Department on daily basis.  

 

Agric Minister’s OIC Presentation Commendable

 

Dr. Sam Sesay’s presentation at the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) on Sierra Leone’s Food Security strives is reported to have been commended by member states in attendance in Istanbul, the Turkish capital. His presentations reportedly centered on current measures put in place by government to improve the sector such as the National Irrigation Development Strategies (NIDS) and Small Holders Commercial Project. The high level senior official meeting of the OIC members states on identifying challenges facing food security was held from the 28-29 September, 2010.

 

Kono People Want Action from Government


Reports from Kono District say residents are disappointed with the present government over their failure to undertake meaningful projects in the district, including the improvement on the status of the headquarter town, Koidu.  They are said to have expressed this disappointment remind the government of the importance of the district and that neglecting them is bad for any government. Their concerns reports say comprise of lack of electricity, pipe borne water and good road network amongst others.  They however commend Koidu Holding Mining Company for their contribution in road rehabilitation.


Police Impose Curfew on Bike Riding in Kenema


Local tabloids say police in Kenema, Eastern Sierra Leone, have imposed curfew on commercial bike riders in that city that spans from 1:00AM to 5:00AM each day. The action was said to have been taken in collaboration with the community people at a Local Policing Partnership Board meeting held recently.  The recent spate in house breaking, burglary and murder in Kenema that are connected to bike riders reportedly caused this decision to be reached by stakeholders.  Bike riders are often suspected and accused of conniving with criminals to commit crime.


Makeni City on Time Bomb


The Independent Media Commission (IMC) is seriously worried over a looming threat of chaos that will undermine peace and media credibility in the country. According to reports, a certain community radio station has unprofessionally allowed itself to be used by religious groups in that part of the country to trade invectives at each other. This according to the IMC code of conduct undermines stability borne out of religious hatred which has warranted the commission to issue out a press release in the form of warning to the said station. 


SLBC DG Takes Official Control


The Acting Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Mr. Patrick Tarawally has officially handed over to the substantive Director General, Mr. Jaccob Elvis Gbanabon Hallowell.  Mr. Hallowel was recently approved by Parliament to head that transformed institution.  Mr. Tarawally who temporarily occupied that position for a period of three months successfully oversaw the transition period of the corporation.


3 Armed Robbers Arraigned in Court


Saidu Jalloh, Alhassan Koroma and Samuel Olarnwaju Adekeye have appeared before Magistrate Davies Cole of Freetown Magistrat
e Court No. 11 to answer to one count charge of alleged conspiracy to commit felony. It was reportedly that on the 26th of September, 2010 at Wellington Street, the accused persons connived with others unknown to break into the residence of one Mr. Karim and carted away a television set and a motor cycle worth over Le 5 million. The mater was adjourned to 15th October 2010 while the accused were remanded at the Pademba Road Prison.
