As part of his constitutional mandates as stipulated in Sub-section 1(84) of the Sierra Leone constitution, President Ernest Bai Koroma on Friday 8th October 2010 officially opened the fourth session of the third parliament of the second republic of Sierra Leone on the theme ‘36 months of turnaround.’  He catalogued his government’s achievement for the past twelve months.

Speaking at the well of parliament, the president disclosed that he felt enthused as a Member of Parliament and also Head of State to present the that honorable house the achievements of his government taking into cognizance his commitment to successfully accomplish proposed projects.  He said he came to power at the time when countries were faced the problems of the global economic crisis. He however, said in spite of that, Sierra Leone remained as one of the few best transforming African countries in the world through the effort of his government.  He cited areas such as the world MDG index, the Mo-Ibrahim index among others which he said have proved that we are experiencing a steady progress in business, corruption free society and democracy.

He rated his government’s achievement in five key sectors-Electricity, health, agriculture infrastructure and good governance. In the area of energy, the president said there has been tremendous increase in the supply of electricity in the city, especially with the increase in capacity from 5 megawatts to 60 megawatts.  He said with effective implementation, majority of the electricity projects in the country would have been completed by 2011.  He also promised that the issue of water would soon be addressed as many projects were in the pipe line to augment Guma Valley’s supply.

For infrastructure, President Koroma noted that road construction are presently ongoing all over the country. He informed that a feeder road policy has been drafted to guide the implementation of various feeder road rehabilitation projects across the country. He also said that his government was determined to construct all roads, as the first government to do that in the history of Sierra Leone.

In the area of agriculture, Ernest Koroma noted that sector has been prioritized in his Agenda for Change since it contributes 25% of our gross domestic product (GDP), employing T! of a country’s population.  He informed that 10,000 farmers have been brought together to form cooperatives and 120 agricultural centers created through the commercialization project to improve the sector.  On education and youth issues, President Koroma informed that 20 million dollars support has been tendered for skills project and the employment of youths, project which he said would improve these sectors especially now that National Youths Commission has been established. He expressed his government’s determination to construct more schools and technical and vocational centers across the country.

Other sector which the president disclosed to have yielded good dividend in the country are the private sector, the new minerals act,  the petroleum sector, information and communications sector, security sector, economic sector and the justice.

However, members of the main opposition, SLPP have vehemently and unequivocally debunked several aspects of the president’s speech as fascinating lies about achievement; and that he was merely trying to re-echo past invincible achievement of the opposition party.
