The Kenema District Chairman of opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Mr. Arthur Koroma on Friday 8th October, 2010 warned party supporter to resist individuals who are in the habit of using intimidating tactics to subdue them into supporting other political parties.
The Chairman who was speaking during a general meeting organized by the SLPP Constituency 12 executives at Mano-Junction displayed a booklet of the 1991 constitution for all to see and quoted Chapter Two which guarantees freedom of assembly and association of citizens.
Mr. Koroma explained that the Constitution gives everyone the right to associate with any organization or political party of his/her choice. “No human being on earth has the right to prevent another person from doing so,” the chairman affirmed. In al legal tone, Arthur Koroma also quoted Part Three of the Chieftaincy Art 2009 which clearly states the functions of the Paramount Chiefs. Among these functions he went on, are to supervise the collection of local tax, assist appropriate authorities to collect other relevant taxes, use the best of their abilities to prevent crimes and up hold law and order among their subjects; as well as to supervise the election of sub-chiefs and all intent and purposes to supervise development activities in their various chiefdoms. “So this explains why even paramount chiefs do not have constitutional mandate to force their people to transfer to another political party,” he furthered, while calling on all SLPP members in Kenema District particularly and the country at large to always be mindful and resist any attempt of intimidation tactics for political gain.
Earlier, Chairman of Constituency 12, Mr. Alusine Bah who chaired the occasion said that the purpose of the meeting was to continue the party’s activities in the constituency and a wake up call that the SLPP is very much alive there, contrary to rumors that the party has in recent times lost its grip in that constituency. He called on all to make sound judgment on parliamentary representation for 2012 elections as he warned against candidates who splash money only to be elected and later abandon the people.
