In her opening remarks, the chairperson who is also the Deputy Chairperson of the Tonkolili District Council (TDC), Madam Fatmata Daramy Sesay lauded the efforts of Concern Worldwide for their tremendous work in the district which she described as a blessing for the people of Tonkolili as they are in desperate need of development.

Speaking on the aims and objective of the forum and the update of concern, the National Coordinator for Food, Income and Marketing (FIM) Programme, Tayo D. Alabi disclosed that the forum formed part of their activities of the Building Resilience and Community Engagement (BRACE) project funded by the EU since 2007 to 2010. He maintained that the central aim of the People’s Forum is to strengthen community participation in the Local Institutional structures helping to regularize ward committee meetings and promoting grass root democracy by encouraging community leaders to meet with members of their community at general or equal platform.

He highlighted his organisation’s operational targets in three main areas of education, health and agriculture.  “Concern Food Facility programme funded by EU focuses on institutional capacity building initiatives,” he posited.

Tayo revealed that Concern’s new projects sponsored by EU and Irish Aid are implemented in the Kholifa Rowalla, Yoni and Kholifa Mabang chiefdoms respectively.  He added that CWW is expecting to supaply four hundred and fifty (450) animals and have trained 450 people to receive these animals; and that they have already distributed twenty nine metric tons of seedlings to 580 households, 32 metric tons to 35 groups and built six farmers’ schools amongst others.

Speaking on the way forward, the Area Coordinator for CWW in Tonkolili Patrick Barrasa disclosed that plans have b
een put in place to build four stores and train management committees.  He noted that the EU project they implemented was successful which has given them mandate by the EU for a second phase.
