NAS Ends Sensitizing children on AIDS


The National Aids Secretarial (NAS) in collaboration with UNICEF, Concern world wide has ended a three day consultative conference on children and AIDS, at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex king tom in Freetown .The conference which started on the 11th ended on the 13th October 2010 with the theme Invest in children ,invest in the future . The chairman of the programme, Dr Soccoh kabia is reported as saying that the objective of the conference was to ensure that children in Sierra Leone have a say on HIV/AID care, prevention and treatment and how its affect their health, growth and developmen


Makeni to get electricity supply


Local news reports say Makeni Town and its environs will soon benefit from electricity supply before Christmas celebration. This was reportedly disclosed by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, professor Ogunlade Davidson, According to reports, the prepaid meter system will be used to avoid fraud and delay of paying electricity bills.


CCSL calls on Kailahun to embark on extensive agriculture


The Food Security Task Force of the Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) has called on the people of Kailahun to seriously embark on large scale farming. According to reports, the call was made by the CCSL for the people to concentrate on agriculture so as to compliment the food security drive in the country. CCSL is reported to have provided large quantum of seeds for large scale farmers in the country.


AISL Trains Human Right Volunteers


Amnesty International Special Programme for African (SPA) in collaboration with Amnesty International Sierra Leone has ended a week long training of human right volunteers in the Port Loko District. The aim of the training was to capacitate participants on human rights activism especially women abuse and violations. The project officer for SPA Mr. Kojo Ernest Hammond is reported to have said that his institution decided to engage the people of Port loko because of the gross human right violations and abuse of women and children.


British Council Trains School Children on Climate Change


The British Council on 15th October 2010 has conducted a two day training for one hundred and twenty children from different schools in Freetown. The purpose of the training was to raise the awareness of children on climate change issues .The Director of British Council Lauise Waddingham is reported as saying that due to the critical nature of climate change issues and its consequences, they decided to organize training for school children to raise their awareness of the issue at an early age. The training reports say will give the children knowledge and skills to secure their environment.


Fire Destroys a Shop at Kissy


A mysterious fire on 13 October 2010 destroyed a shop with goods worth million of leones at Shell kissy, main Bai Bureh Road . According to reports , the accident happened at 9 p m with flames suddenly taking over four shops located at the same building but with the swift intervention of National Fire Fforce (NFF) only one shop was destroyed. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained by the police .


SLAJ to Launch Economic Network


The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) will on Tuesday 19th October 2010 officially launch a network of development and economic reporters (NEDER), which was established by the association in July after a financial training session sponsored by the World Bank Group in Sierra Leone and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). According to reports this will ensure that development issues and economy of the country are explained to the people in terms that they will understand so that they can make the necessary choice for themselves.
