NGO Targets Teenage Pregnancy


News reports monitored have it that a local non- governmental organization, Destiny Women Empowerment Organization (DWEO) has in collaboration with the UNFPA taken up the fight against teenage pregnancy. The Programme Officer of the organization Pastor Usif Bangura is reported as saying that they were embarking on advocating for help from donor organizations, government and agencies to join eradicate this problem since according to him the issue of teenage pregnancy must be a concern to all.


Kissy Mental Home Lacks Facilities

 

Monitored Newspaper reports have it that the Kissy Mental Home among other things urgently requires an Out Patient facility, tools to strengthen data management like computers, printers and photocopiers, a diagnostic laboratory and X-ray facilities, dispensary, laundry and occupational therapy facilities. The medical superintendent Dr. Andrew Muana is reported to have said that the facilities are necessary for the overall functionality of the hospital as a tertiary teaching and referral hospital, as well as a center for mental health research.


Sand Mining ‘ Wahala’ at Goderich


Local tabloid reports say the Headman of Shebro Town, Goderich, Mustapha Papa Kamara says his community has been deprived of revenue generated from sand mining from Sugar Land in the same village. According to reports youths in the community have threatened to storm the mining site if this kind of ugly situation continues to happen. The Local Unit Commander for the Goderich Police Division is said to have  summoned an emergency meeting of stakeholders to dialogue on the youth’s complaint and to reach a peaceful settlement .


NRA to Open Domestic Tax Department


Newspaper reports have revealed that the National Revenue Authority (NRA) has disclosed plans to establish a domestic tax department. According to reports, this department, which is scheduled to start operations in 2011, is to satisfy the expectation of the tax paying public. The department is said to have been designed to see that the Income Tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST) department come under one body with a commissioner and a deputy.

 

Soldiers Arrested with Stolen Bed Nets


Local tabloids have intimated that four personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), including a civilian have been arrested trying to smuggle eighty-
eight bails of mosquito nets said to be property of the Government of Sierra Leone. Reports say the soldiers were nabbed while trying to pass through Kailahun District into Guinea on board a military vehicle.


President Koroma Disappoints SLAJ


Newspaper reports say the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone Dr Ernest Bai Koroma has disappointed the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ). According to reports the President of SLAJ, Umaru Fofanah is said  to have stated that President Koroma in his speech delivered in parliament  failed to  mention  the repeal of Section Five of the Public Order Act of 1965 that is at variance with democratic practice. 


DOs to Resume Work in December

 

Newspaper reports monitored have revealed that the Minister of Internal Affairs, local Government and Rural Development Dauda Kamara has said that District Officers (DO) will resume work by December this year. Hon. Dauda Kamara is said to have stated that the DOs are civil servants that serve as agents of the central government in each district, adding that they are not recruited on party basis.


Judge Frees 2 ACC Accused


Local tabloid reports say Justice Mary Sey has acquitted and discharged two accused persons who were on trial before her on two separate charges of corruption. Reports say one of the accused persons, Paul Joe Lappia was facing 9 counts of misappropriation of public funds contrary to Section 12 (1) of the ACC Act of 2000, while the other accused person Aiah Chrispin Nganjah former establishment secretary in the Ministry of Youths and Sports was facing a count charge of misappropriation of funds amounting to Le 89 Million.
