Audit Service Sierra Leone has become a proud recipient of a Certificate of Recognition from NASSIT for compliance with the provisions of the NASSIT Act 2002.

This was revealed to this press in an exclusive interview with the Auditor General, Mrs. Anna Caesar at her Tower Hill office on 19th September, 2010 who said that the award was received last week.

Mrs. Caesar told that her institution deserved to be recognized by NASSIT as they never renege as far as the area of compliance was concerned. “NASSIT contributions for staff members are paid regularly in line with the stipulated time given by the scheme,” she assured. She appealed to other institutions to emulate the good work of Audit Service. “I would like to ask all institutions to comply with NASSIT to help all Sierra Leoneans to be better provided for in their old age,” she said.

Briefly hinting on the institution’s operations, Mrs. Carsar said it is an off shoot of the Auditor General’s Department with mandate drawn from Section 119 of the 1991 constitution of Sierra Leone. “Our mandate is to audit government institutions, parastatals and anywhere that government pours its funds,” she furthered, adding that they have been able to keep to their constitutional mandate by presenting reports to government on time.  Mrs. Caesar disclosed that that they have established new areas such as Performance Audit, which has already submitted report to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports on the Poor Performance in Secondary School Examinations with soonest plans to go into Information Technology and Civil Works audits as well.

On some of the challenges facing Audit Service, Mrs. Caesar cited accommodation as a major concern. She complained that they spend a lot of money to rent offices in Freetown and the regions. She reiterated that her aim is to ensure that the ASSL gets its own building in Freetown and the regional towns.  She also said that most institutions do not know much about the need for auditing which is affecting auditors to carry out their functions.  She on that note appealed to the various institutions to comply with them in carrying out their mandate since according to her accountability must be the watch word if any country is to boast of development.
