Wealth Builders Defence Team Dodge Court Sitting

 

The defence team of the beleaguered Wealth Builders’ CEO, Peter Ayilla Johnson was reportedly conspicuously absent in Monday’s court hearing of their client. Lawyers Musa Plous Sesay, Sahid Mohamed Sesay AKA Baba, SAJ Jamiru and Elves Kargbo were inexplicably absent in defence of the Nigerian businessman. Magistrate Wellington of Court No. 2 asked Peter Ayilla Johnson for his lawyers only for the accused to say that ‘they are around.’  The Magistrate gave a stern warning to the accused to producer his defence at the next adjournment or he would be forced to draw the file from the prosecutors and give ruling.  The magistrate said the next adjournment date of Monday 25th October 2010 will be the last adjournment of proceedings. He was remanded at Pademba Road.

 

Homosexuality Teacher Granted Bail

 

Daniel Martin, a class 6 teacher of the St Anthony Primary who is answering to a count charge of homosexuality involving a pupil of the school has reportedly been granted bail by Magistrate Steven Conteh of Court No. 1 in Freetown. Application on his behalf was made by defending lawyer, Leon Jenkins Johnson who is said have challenged the evidence against his client. After making the application, the accused was granted bail with two (2) sureties who should be property owners in the Western Area. The matter was adjourned to the 22nd October, 2010. 

 

No Bail for Free Health Care Drugs Accused

 

The Kenema High Court has refused bail to three persons standing trial for allegedly stealing medicines from the Kailahun District Medical Store on 31st August 2010. The three accused are reportedly standing trail for three count charges ranging from conspiracy to forgery contrary to Section 4 (1) of the Forgery Act of 1913.  It could be recalled that police in Kailahun discovered twenty-one cartons of assorted drugs valued over twenty million leones at a private residence in Kailahun.

 

SLPA Hosts Regional Ports Management

 

The Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA) has reportedly collaborated with the Ports Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) to conduct the mid-term meeting of technical committees of the various ports managements.  The five-day session commenced in Freetown, Sierra Leone on Wednesday, 18th instant. The general manager of SLAP, captain Benjamin Davies is reported as saying that the meeting is geared towards enhancing African states to adopt changes in the dynamics of shipping and port industry.

 

Tejan Kabbah Heads AU Mission to Tanzania

 

The former president of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Tejan Kabba has been appointed to head the African Union election observer mission in Tanzania, southern Africa.  He is expected to depart for Dar EL Salam, the Tanzanian capital on 26th October. As part of his mission, the former president is expected to have pre-election address with both local and international media. He will reportedly also meet with the incumbent, President Jakaya Kikwete and other elections stakeholders.

 

PPRC Starts Outreach to Secondary Schools

 

The Political Parties’ Registration Commission (PPRC) on 18th October 2010 started the pilot phase of a nationwide outreach to secondary schools. The project started at the Sierra Leone Muslim Congress in the east end of Freetown. According to reports, the project is part of the commission’s drive to sensitize the public about their mandate and functions. They will basically embark on educating school children on political tolerance and non violence, including the preaching of hate during electioneering process. The pilot phase in Freetown is said to be targeting 15 secondary schools.

 

Disaster Strikes at Lungi Hospital

 

The Ked Cole Memorial Hospital has been burgled by thieves over the week end, reports say. According to reports the thieves used a welding machine to force open the main door to the hospital. The thieves carted away a laser machine, a portable ECG machine, an X- ray, camera, TV and DV sets. The police are said to have arrested one suspect in connection to the burglary. Investigation is ongoing.
