Students Cry Over Fees Increment


Local tabloids have it that students of tertiary institutions across  the country  are raising concern over the increase of college fees by their authorities  for the 2010/2011 academic year. According to reports, there has been a 90% rise in fees at Fourah Bay College, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, Milton Margai College of Education and many others. This unprecedented situation reports say has warranted the students to call on the government and other stakeholders to intervene. 


Magistrate Throws Out Fraud Case


Magistrate J.O Wellington of Freetown Magistrate Court No.3 has on Thursday 21st October 2010 discharged Mohamed Fofanha who was standing trial on an alleged case of  fraud. It was reported that the accused collected sleepers and other items valued at three millions six hundred and thirty thousand leones, from one Umu Sesay with the intention to sell. The magistrate after listening to the explanation of both the accused and the complainant he threw the matter out of court on the grounds that it was a civil matter.


Armed Robbers on the Rampage at Wellington


Residents of Loko Town in the Wellington Community Freetown are reported to be in perpetual fear as armed robbers continue to break into their homes at night  and inflict  violence  and terror on them . According to reports, more than ten people have been wounded and property worth millions of leones have been carted away. Residents are said to have called on the police to step up security in that area.

 

8 million Euros to Relocate Kroo Bay Residents


Reports say the Freetown City Council has received the sum of Eight Million Euros to relocate the inhabitants of the Kroo Bay Community in Freetown. The community has been identified as a prone disaster area and the government has decided to relocate the people in order to save lives. The project is being funded by the European Union.


NAG Ends Community Dialogue Forum


National Accountability Group (NAG) a non-governmental organization in collaboration with Transparency International has recently ended a community dialogue forum in Kenema City Eastern Sierra Leone. The main purpose of the forum was to update councilors, civil societies and the public on their quarterly monitoring activities on service delivery system targeting local councils in Kenema District.


Salone Children Banned from Going for Hajj

 

The Government of Sierra Leone has on Tuesday 19th October 2010 banned children under the age of 18 from taking part in this year’s pilgrimage to Mecca. This action reports say was taken by the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs in order to combat child trafficking. This year’s pilgrimage which according to report is facilitated by the government has met serious criticisms from other hajj agencies.


Indian Sentence for Smoking Cannabis


An Indian  National Sikhripuran Kumar was on Tuesday 19th October 2010 convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment or pay an alternative fine of Le500,000 by Magistrate J.O Wellington . The accused who pleaded guilt to the charge was sentenced for unlawful possession of cannabis This crime reports say, has become rife especially among the youthful population.

 

Mines Minister Signs MOU with US-AID


The Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Alhaji Alpha Kanu has on Thursday 21st October 2010 signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Unites States  Agency for International Development (USAID).According to reports, the MOU was signed to support  government on the implementation of the artisanal mining policy.
