Samu Elections Postponed


Local tabloid reports say the paramount chieftaincy election for the Samu Chiefdom in the Kambia District earlier scheduled commence in the various sections on the 20th October, 2010 has been put on hold. According to reports quoting the deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Local Government and Rural Development, Hadiru Kalokoh, the postponement is engendered by disagreement emanating from the gazetted Chiefdom Councilors’ list that is said to contain series of omissions of names of prospective and eligible tribal authorities.


Water Crisis Hits Moyamba Government Hospital


Reports monitored from local newspapers have it that the District Medical Officer for Moyamba, Dr. Adekali Kamara has said that the District Government Hospital is facing serious water shortage. The Doctor is reported as saying that the hospital urgently needs pipe borne water facility as they most often depend on dug out wells outside the hospital. This is acute state of affairs has reportedly compounded the already deplorable conditions of workers and patients, especially pregnant women and lactating mothers admitted at the hospital.


PMDC Holland Surrenders to SLPP

 

Newspaper reports say on 16th October 2010 one Mr. Teddy Foday Musa, a founding member of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change together with six former members of the PMDC Holland Chapter declared their membership for the SLPP and automatically registered with the SLPP Continental Europe chapter. Reports say the SLPP continental Europe has embarked on a campaign to strengthen their membership and make their chapter competitive.


Sierra Leone Shipping Company Cautions MBAS


The Sierra Leone Shipping Company (SLSC) has reportedly reminded Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including Local Council authorities to beware of the cabinet directive of 2008 which required those institutions to be clearing their goods through them. According to reports, the MDAs and local councils have totally ignored those directives and instead continue to clear and forward goods through other agencies.  This is said to have worried the SLBC, saying it is bad attitude on their part to ignore the mandate.


EX- Service Men on Blood Training


Over thirty retired Service Men who have served in Iraq and other countries over the weekend received a special training on blood donor recruitment and blood donation at the Brima Eleganza Hall in Freetown. The event was organized by the National Blood Service Centre with the aim of recruiting and sustaining large amount of voluntary Blood Donors in order to save lives. Reports say there have been a lot of difficulties to collect blood from voluntary donors while many patients died as a result of blood shortage.

 

Senior Police Officer Dies in Jail

 

Local tabloids have it that, a Senior Police Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mohamed M’ Bayo Bangura has died at the Pademba Road Maximum Prison in Freetown. According to reports the ASP was awaiting High Court trial for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to armed robbers in the Western Area and beyond. The cause of his death is yet unknown as his corpse is awaiting an autopsy examination at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown.


Army Wives Call for Empowerment


It has been disclosed that the new executive of the Armed Forces Wives’ Cooperative are requesting for empowerment of their membership to the hierarchy of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. The head of the new executive, Madam Jane Koroma, wife of the current CDS has reportedly disclosed that they are facing tremendous financial constraints. The Armed Forces Wives’ Cooperative Society is currently planning to meet their membership in the provinces in order to strategize a way forward to enhance their association. The cooperative is appealing for empowerment from the Military hierarchy for more robust actions.

 

Police Wife Donates to School

 

The Wife of the Inspector General of Police, Mrs. Mariama Munu on Friday 22nd October, 2010 reportedly donated various items to the Police Primary School at King Tom in western Freetown. The donation was done on behalf of all the Police Wives. The donated items included learning materials such as books, pens, rulers, and other materials including football, a set of brass band and some bags of rice.
