The Honourable Chief Justice of Republic of Sierra Leone, Haja Umu-Hawa Tejan-Jalloh has commended President Ernest Bai Koroma for what she said was an indication of the shared vision of his Executive Arm and her Judicial Arm of Government to bring justice to the people and rebuild what the 11 years war had destroyed. The Chief Justice was speaking during the Thursday 28th October, 2010 commissioning of newly constructed Magistrate Court at York Village in the Western Rural District by H.E. President Koroma himself. She said that notwithstanding their heavy schedules, both the President and the Vice President traveled all the way to York to grace the auspicious occasion with their presence.

She revealed that before the war, there was a Magistrate Court serving York environs but sadly it was destroyed in the war.

“The strength of an individual or a community is found in its resolve to rise again when it falls, especially when there is someone to give a helping hand,” she said adding her further appreciation for the United Nations Peace-building Fund which is currently financing many developments within the Judiciary all aimed at addressing “lingering underlying and root causes of war including infrastructure development”.

Chief Justice Tejan-Jalloh confessed that the York Magistrate Court was still in need of additional developments but it would not stop the Court from commencing its functions of rendering justice to the York community. She ended with delightful appreciation for the huge turn out of York residents and its leaders. In his address, the York Village Headman, Mr. Peter Kofie Acheampong said they felt honoured to have the President, the Vice President and the Chief Justice all at the same time in their community, adding that the restoration of a Magistrate court in their community was a demonstration of Government’s commitment to promote justice and fair trials for its citizens.

Delivering his keynote address, President Koroma commended UNDP and JSDP for supporting construction of what he referred to as a wonderful structure, saying the new court would help bring justice to the door step of the people. He however informed that it is the responsibility of the people to make proper use of the facility. He assured of his government’s support to the Judiciary by ensuring that more and more Magistrate Courts are being constructed across the country.  He said the York Court will be of great use to York environs in maintaining sanity and as a deterrent to crime.

President Koroma called on the Judiciary to continue their good work in the country as the government is ready to support them at all times. He then, on behalf of the people of Sierra Leone, dedicated and opened the York Magistrate’s Court to loud cheers of appreciation from the gathering.
