Alpha Timbo Completes Payment

 

Local tabloids have it that the former Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations in the erstwhile SLPP Government, Mr. Alpha Timbo has completed his registration for the SLPP flagbearership. This is the second aspirant that has come forward to pay the non-refundable declaration fee of Le 50 Million after the first aspirant, Dr. Kapindi Soyei. The fee was reportedly paid by Mr. Timbo’s supporters on his behalf last Friday 29th October, 2010 as he is said to be in the USA strategizing for his election campaign.


Medical Officer Cries for Help


The Medical Officer of the Njala University Hospital, Makonde Campus in Southern Sierra Leone Dr. Abu Biaboko Minah is calling on the APC led government to facilitate the free health care in that hospital. According to reports, the since the hospital received its second consignment of free health care drugs in June this year no other supply has been made. Reports say the beneficiary patients-lactating mothers, under fives and pregnant women- have been visiting the hospital with the expectation of getting their usual free health care facilities.


MPs Approve Public Partnership Act


The Sierra Leone Parliament on 28th October, 2010 reportedly enacted the Public Private Partnership Bill  2010 into Law. The Act is intended to promote and facilitate the implementation of Public/Private partnership transactions for the infrastructure and social sector service project to establish a Public Private Partnership Unit. The bill reports say was tabled before Parliament by the Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development Momodu L Kargbo and it was unanimously passed into law by the House. 


Fuel Price Hits the Market


The Oil Marketers of Sierra Leone have reportedly announced an increase in the price of fuel since last Friday 29th October, 2010. The price of petrol, diesel and kerosene is said to have increased from Le 16,500 to Le 17,500 per gallon while fuel oil has moved from Le 10, 393.02 to 11, 4730.02 per gallon. According to reports, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has terminated all subsidies on petroleum products this year.

 

FiBank Opens New Branch at Calaba Town


The First International Bank (FiBank) over the weekend opened a new branch at Calaba Town in Freetown. According to reports the bank has now got 27 branches and produces the highest number of banking outlets in the country. The purpose of establishing a branch at Calaba Town is to ease customers’ movement to conduct banking services in that community rather than coming to central Freetown.


President Koroma Administers the First Dose of Polio Vaccine

 

President Koroma recently administered the first dose of Oral Polio Vaccine to a seven-month-old baby at State House in Freetown. The involvement of the President in the campaign reports say is to demonstrate the high level of political commitment, create visibility and stimulate the public for a successful campaign to eradicate polio in the country. The campaign was synchronized with 10 other West –African countries and the occasion  was organized as part of the follow-up to WHO Regional Director’s letter to President Koroma by the WHO and UNICEF country representatives.


Robbers Attack Vehicles along the Highway


Reports have alleged that armed robbers have conducted four separate attacks along the Waterloo- Masiaka and Matotoka-Yeli Highways in one week alone. The robbers are reported to have attacked commercial and private vehicles and fuel stations and carted away property worth millions of Leones. The Regional Police Commander North is reported to have confirmed the arrest of five suspects who are said to be in custody. Many business people are said to have been robbed by this group of armed robbers. Police continue their search for the escapees.


Ministry Surveys Gov’t &Private Lands


The Director of Surveys and lands in the Lands Ministry, Dr. William Farmer has reportedly disclosed that the ministry was on survey of both government and private lands in Western Area. He said there is serious problem about land matter as people were always making complaints that their private land have been turned into state land and that should be immediately solved. He is reported as saying that they were trying hard to differentiate state lands from private owned plots.
