As part of their commitment to promote health and deliver quality services, the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) on Wednesday 3rd November 2010 started their 36th Annual Conference at the Sierra Leone Bank Complex in Freetown. The conference is being held on the theme: "surveillance of Epidemic prone diseases in Sierra Leone".
The Conference which attracted many medical practioners and other stakeholders including government representatives, WHO, UN Family and members of the diplomatic communities, aims at projecting the work of the medical profession and saving the lives of patients. It focuses on the role and regulations of the medical fields as well as over coming challenges.
In his statement, the president of SLMDA, Dr. Dunstan R. Thomas said the existence of their association was very essential towards quality health delivery services in the country. He disclosed that SLMDA has grown in number with many achievements in recent years. He informed that even in the health delivery institutions, there has been so many improvements, including the free health care, and new medical equipment. He maintained that the conditions and service of many medical personal have been improved. He commended the World Health Organisation (WHO) and many other institutions for sponsoring the event.
In her key note address, on behalf of the UN Family and WHO, Dr. Tenin Gakurure who doubles as Health systems specialist of WHO said the theme of the conference was very essential as she put it, communicable diseases remain a major problem globally.
