Kailahun Market Turns Kitchen


The Multipurpose Market constructed by the National Commissioner for Social Action (NACSA) in Kailahun, with funds from the Government of Germany had been totally abandoned and is now used by squatters for both dwelling and kitchen purposes. According to reports, the market is in a shabby state as people now used the structure as laundry and kitchen. The squatters are said to have occupied some of the stores meant for storage of goods and wares.


U.S Ambassador Inspects Projects in Kailahun

 

The United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone Michael Owen had made his first official visit to the provinces to inspect U.S Government funded projects. The Ambassador is said to have described the World Vision supported projects as impressive and economically viable for the transformation of war ravaged communities in Kailahun District for economic growth and sustainable development. According to reports, the Ambassador is reported to have made this statement following his visit to World Vision/ PAGE funded projects implemented in Kailahun District.

 

Defence for Children Intl. Launches Report on Juvenile

 

Defence for Children International (DCI) an NGO involved in the promotion and monitoring of juvenile justice in Sierra Leone on the 4th November 2010 officially launched the report on juvenile justice in Sierra Leone titled ‘Beyond the law’ which  is said to be focused on basic issues on juvenile justice in Sierra Leone. According to reports, the juvenile report also called for the implementation of the Child Right Act. Mr. Momoh Fofana a legal practitioner and notary for child right advocate in Sierra Leone is said to have called on stakeholders to adopt a serious approach when dealing with juvenile justice.


Bursar Faces 65 Count Charges

 

The former Bursar of Sierra Leone Muslim Brotherhood Secondary School (SLMB) Makeni was on the 4th November 2010 arraigned in the High Court in Makeni for various offences under the Anti Corruption Act 2008. The ACC arraigned Mr. Alpha Turay on sixty five (65) count charges of misappropriation of public funds contrary to section 36 of the Anti- Corruption Act No 12 of 2008. The accused who was refused bail by Justice Sam Margai pleaded not guilty on all counts. The matter was adjourned to Tuesday 9th November 2010.


EFJ Discusses Illegal Fishing

 

A two day conference on Illegally Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Mano River Union had ended at the British Council in Freetown. The conference which is said to have been jointly organized by the Environmental Justice Foundation, FAO and the Government of Sierra Leone brought together artisanal and industrial fishing groups, NGOs among others. The purpose of the conference was to improve the awareness of the impact and challenged posed by IUU fishing and identified how best to achieve a sustainable fisheries management in the MRU region

 

7 Ghanaians Rescued at Sea, 5 others Missing


The Maritime Wing of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces deployed at the forward operational base in Sulima Southern Sierra Leone had rescued a fishing boat called ‘Great Emmanuel 5’ that had seven Ghanaians on board. According to reports, the rescue operation took place at the Atlantic Ocean at Kaseh Village in Bohoi Island Bonthe District on October 31st. The other boat called ‘Great Emmeuel 1’with five other Ghanaian crew on board is said to be still missing. A search and rescue operation is said to be on for the missing boat


Rokel under Attack

 

A gang of unsuspected youths on Wednesday 3rd November 2010 in the evening hours besieged the Rokel Street axis situated a few centimeters away from State House and carted away valuable items including mobile phones, personal effect, cash, hand bags among others worth million of Leones. Residents as well as traders in that area are said to be living in fear as the way the broad day robbery occurred was fearsome. The police media boss ASP Ibrahim Samura is reported as saying that the matter was under investigation.


Deputy Speaker Opens Community Bridge at Waterloo


The Deputy Speaker Hon. Chukuma Johnson had officially opened the newly constructed bridge linking Waterloo Village and Lumpa. The Le 33 million bridge which is named the Oroko Bridge was constructed by the Waterloo/ UK Partnership in collaboration with the local residents. The Deputy Speaker is said to have thanked the partnership for using the donations for their intended purposes
