Civil Society calls for Police Reinforcement

 

The recent discovery of a dead and mutilated child in Kenema coupled with the spate in armed robbery attacks on residents and on high ways in the north-south axis of the country has reportedly alarmed not only civil society groups but also human rights activists.  This has therefore, warranted those advocacy groups to recommend the immediate reinforcement of personnel of the Sierra Leone Police with more logistics and manpower to enable the institution maintain internal security.


Salone to Host Global Entrepreneurship Week

 

The African Foundation for Development (AFFORD-SL) is preparing to host the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) with its partners in Sierra Leone from the 15th to 21st November, 2010.  According to reports, this program will promote entrepreneurship among young people and open new opportunities across the country. The Theme for this years program is Doorway to Youthful Innovative Enterprises. The programme is expected to bring together prominent international and local partners.

 

Family Home Movement Offers Medical Treatment


A team of medical staff from Italy is offering free medical treatment under the Family Homes Movement (FHM). The team has so far reportedly offered treatments to people at Mayenkineh School Calabatown, Laka, Emergency and Makeni Hospitals .The team of medical staff is said to comprise two medical doctors, a general surgeon and two nurses. The project reports say is mainly to offer treatment in mental and other health issues.

 

8 Schools Benefit From Australia Gesture

 

Local news reports say the Australian government is providing US $27,070 for the electrification of eight schools and three health centers in the Bombali District, Northern Sierra Leone. The project which is said to be implemented by Energy for Opportunity will support two secondary and six primary schools, two health clinics and one maternal health unit in the district. The Australia High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Mr. William Williams is reported to have said that he was pleased for the support that the Australian government was providing for the project as it would improve on the lives of Sierra Leoneans.

 

Sandor Chief Appeals for Bad Roads Rehabilitation


The Section Chief of Kondeya, Sandor Chiefdom, Kono District Eastern Sierra Leone has called on the attention of the government to the bad road condition in the chiefdom and the district at large. Chief Mohamed Kamara is reported as saying that the bad road network hampers not only agricultural activities but development in the district in general. The chief pointed out that government and its partners had provided several opportunities for the chiefdom to promote agriculture but their efforts can only yield dividend if they had good roads to facilitate the movement of crops.


High Rate of HIV/AIDS in Bo, Kenema

 

Health Commentary local tabloids claim has expressed fear over the upsurge of HIV/ADIS and other sexually transmitted diseases in the Bo and Kenema townships. This according to a Community Health Officer, Mr. AE Sesay is as a result of low level of sensitization and non utilization of condoms among active sexual partners. Stakeholders in the health sector in those two regions are reported to have appealed to government and development agencies for funding and adequate supply of drugs.


Kenema City Council Drags Defaulters to Court

 

Reports monitored from local tabloids point out that the Kenema City Council has dragged hundred of residents to court for failing to pay city rates, licenses and taxes for their properties and businesses in spite of several admonitions. This the Councils Chief Administrator Bockarie K Banme says is in accordance with Section 69 subsection 2 of the Local Council Act 2004 which gives power to councils to levy taxes and dues with authority to take action against defaulters after a specific period has elapsed.


New Library Board Chairman Faces Challenges

 

On assuming office since 1st November, 2010, the newly appointed Chairman of Sierra Leone Library Board, Professor Gbamaja is said to be facing serious challenges.  Professor Gbamaja is reported to have expressed dismay over existing administrative mix up and the manner in which former board members received salaries for virtually doing nothing.
