The Chairperson of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), Mrs. Bernadette Cole, on Monday 15TH November 2010 told pressmen that there are 32 awards including certificates and trophies to be clinched at this years National Media Awards Competition.

She made this disclosure at the official launching of the 2010 Awards Ceremony at their Siaka Stevens Street Secretariat in Freetown.

In her statement, she commended Zain-Sierra Leone for being the sole sponsor of the awards ceremony since 2005. She however, informed that this years awards ceremony will not be sponsored by Zain alone. Zain is not going to be the sole sponsor this year; we have other philanthropists like the United Nations who have come on board to help Zain and IMC to motive hard working journalists to continue their good jobs, she said.

Madam Cole further revealed that this year, the competition will cover all publications from 1st January, 2010 to 10th December, 2010.  All journalists (members of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and whose institutions are paid up members to the IMC) should submit their entries for the award from Monday 15th November to 10th December this year. She also informed that guest columnists/writers and producers of TV and radio programmes are also qualified to take part in the competition.  She said application forms should be obtained from the IMC secretariat in Freetown or their regional offices in Bo and Makeni.

She said the awards will go for development journalism which comprises of environmental, mining, education, business and finance, agriculture and food security promotion, tourism and the promotion of industry reporting. Such other reporting on human rights, sports, best news, story, radio features/magazine programmes, newspaper columnists, investigative reporting, creative writing, photo journalism, best cartoonist, women on the move, free health care and SGBV best female reporter for radio TV and print are also included.

Prizes will also be awarded for radio drama and gender issues; and to news paper houses and radio stations that have since been in existence without any break in dissemination and keeping technical standards as well as best indigenous based media websites, she furthered that the best community radio in terms of governance programme and community involvement will be awarded.

UN Communication Adviser, Peter Tayong and Zains Pubic Relations Officer of Zain, June Rose-Johnson said they were committed to giving full support to IMC for the award ceremony slated for Friday 25th February 2011.
