Gola Forest Guards, Others Warned.


The Acting Deputy Protected Area Manager of the Gola Forest Programme, Mr. Alusine S. Fofanah, has reportedly advised both the Forest Guards and Rangers to be vigilant in their duties to protect the Gola Forest. According to him, the guards should be in cordial relationship with the community while protecting both flora and fauna comprising the forest eco-system. Reports also accuse community people of being in the habit of setting snares for animals in the protected forest.


PRIWA Organizes Luncheon Sale to Boost Prisoners

 

Reports have it that a local humanitarian network, Prisoner Womens Association (PRIWA) last Friday organized Luncheon Sale to raise funds for female prisoners at the Pademba Road Prisons in Freetown.  The ceremony is said to have occasioned in the presence of the First Lady, Mrs. Sia Nyama Koroma who is reported to have ceased the opportunity to urge prison officers to encourage prisoners by giving them fair treatment. PRIWA, formed by female prison officers has as main objective to seek the welfare of their members as well as rendering assistance the inmates in the prison.


Thousand of Civil Servants without NASSIT No.


The Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Samura Kamara has reportedly revealed that there are still thousands of civil servants going without the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) number. The Minister is reported to have expressed dismay over this situation, saying that those civil servants are being deprived of claiming their entitlements after retirement.  This is said to be part of Dr. Samuras acknowledgement of the numerous challenges faced by civil servants in spite of governments efforts to address such.

 
Minister Warns Contractors


Reports have it that the Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation recently cautioned both contractors and senior staff of his ministry to cross-check their vouchers before presenting them for approval. According to him, this strategy will greatly help to combat corruption in that ministry. The Deputy Minister is said to have picked up a forged voucher that was sent to him for approval.


2 Motor Bikes for Kono District

 

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is reported to have donated two motor bikes to the Kono District Council last Tuesday. The purpose of the gesture was to monitor the ongoing projects of the council and to fast-track development in the agricultural sector. The council is said to have thanked the organization for its timely donation.

ECOWAS Donates US $291,000 to Flood Victims

Reports have disclosed that a cheque of Two Hundred and Ninety-one Thousand United States Dollars (US$291,000) was last Friday presented to the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development as part of funds set aside for ECOWAS humanitarian response to this years flood disaster victims in the country. According to reports, the donation was made as a symbolic gesture to demonstrate the Communitys commitment to concretizing the move of member states to provide assistance to those whose lives have been affected. The people and government of Sierra Leone have reportedly registered their appreciation for the gesture.

Youths Terrorize Looking Town Community

It has been alleged that hundreds of youths last Wednesday engaged in a fierce battle at the Looking Town Community in the east end of Freetown over the construction of a dam. According to reports, the youths who were from Looking Town and Thunder Hill Communities were all armed with sticks, stones, scissors and other harmful weapons.  The Looking Town residents are reported to have claimed the land whilst the Thunder Hill Community had earlier written a project to construct a dam on the said land.  The protesting youths are reported to have stolen over 200 bags of cement and other items meant for the construction of the dam.
