Police Officers Arrested for Stealing

 

Transport Officer (FTO) in the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Barba   Kamara, and some other officers were past Friday arrested and detained at the CID Headquarters in Freetown for allegedly stealing and selling one police truck. According to reports, ASP Barba clandestinely withdrew one police Magirus Deutz Truck from the police garage at Kingtom, Freetown, and sold it to one business tycoon for an undisclosed amount. ASP Barba is said to have been suspended from duty by the police management while investigation into the matter continues.


Police Raid Tower Hill


A team of police officers from the Central Police Division over the weekend raided the Tower Hill Community and arrested several suspects. Some of the suspects are said to have been caught on the spot smoking cannabis sativa. According to reports, the raid could not be unconnected to the rampant armed robbery attacks in the city. The Tower Hill Community is said to have called on the police to be more vigilant as we approach the festive season.


HIMS Donates to Defence Ministry

 

Handsworth International Mission Services (HIMS), a non governmental and non-political organization, is said to have donated six rolls of military uniforms and crutches to the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Freetown for use by the military officers across the country. The founder of HIMS, Rev Alex Paterson, is reported as saying that the military officers deserve the right to be respected in society which necessitated the need for the donation. The Public Relations Officer of HIMS J. Paul Koroma said the organization was established in the UK to help the needy people in achieving their dream, adding that plans were underway by HIMS Sierra Leone to build a training centre for disabled people.


HELP-SL Empowers Women for Development


A local non-governmental organization Hands Empowering the Less Privileged in Sierra Leone (HELP-SL) with support from Cord Aid Netherlands has commenced a seven-day facilitators training workshop on Star Circle Methodology at Segbwema, Jong Chiefdom, Bonthe District.  According to Janet Kona Momoh, Director of Programme HELP-SL, Star Circle Methodology is a right based approach aimed at empowering vulnerable and marginalized women in rural communities, promoting gender equality, human rights and to encourage women to take leadership roles in our male dominated society.


Machine Crushes Man to Death

 

A winch machine plying the Freetown Waterloo Highway last Saturday lost control along Ribbia Water and in the process killed the operator. According to reports, the operator attempted to jump and escape on the side of the road where the machine crushed him to death. The accident reports say was attributed to over speeding which caused one of the front tyres of the vehicle to explode. Three other people are said to have sustained injuries while the remains of the operator have been   conveyed to the Connaught Hospital for postmortem examination.


Bakers to Strike

 

Over 200 bakers in Freetown are planning to strike due to the rising price of bread flour now being sold at Le145,000 per 50 kilogram bag. According to report, the bakers have unanimously resolved at a meeting held past Friday to temporarily suspend the increase in the price of bread until a union is established to advocate for their welfare.

 

19 SLAD Members Benefited from WFD

 

19 members of the Association of the Deaf in Sierra Leone have benefited from a ten-day long training from the World Federation of the Deaf in Finland held at Pademba Road, Freetown. The training was geared towards empowering and fostering unity among the deaf and advocating for quality co-existence with the non-deaf. The trainees are expected to embark on how to create self employment and how to engage government and non-governmental organizations in advocacy for help geared towards sustainable development for the deaf.


RSLAF, US Embassy Destroy Ammunition


Over 80 tons of military ordnance have been destroyed at the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces firing range at York Road, Waterloo. The ordnance, which included rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGS) and mortars were destroyed by an American defence contractor, Dynacarp International and the bomb disposal unit of the RSLAF. The event was said to have been witnessed by the US Ambassador to Sierra Leone Michael Owen and the Minister of Defence Alfred Paulo Conteh.
