Deputy Speaker warns parliamentarians

 

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Parliament Hon. Chukuma Johnson has on Friday 19th November 2010 expressed his resentment over the absenteeism of parliamentarians during sittings in parliament. Expressing his dismay over the way and manner parliamentarians are absenting themselves, he made reference to the previous sitting held on Thursday 18th November 2010, adding that he felt shy when parliamentarians took French leave. He warned that whenever parliamentarians are leaving the jurisdiction of Freetown or going to their constituencies they must notify the House in writing. He called on them to attend the next sitting in order to debate on the budget.


3 million treated bed nets to be distributed


The Government of Sierra Leone through its partners will on Friday 26th November 2010 start the distribution of three million well-treated mosquito nets throughout the country. According to reports, the World Bank, DFID, the United Nations, the International Federation of the Red Cross Society (IFRC) and United Methodist Church have contributed over 2 million mosquito bed nets. The distribution, reports say, is part of the week long Mami En Pikin Welbodi Week Campaign which focuses on the promotion of maternal and child health country wide.


$400M to boost local farming


The former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has on Friday 19th November 2010 commissioned the rat-free mechanized Agriculture Business Centre (ABC) at Masiaka, northern Sierra Leone. The centre, reports say, is for struggling farmers to process and store their crops after harvest. According to reports, most farmers lose a greater percent of their yields because of poor storage conditions after harvest.


President Koroma cheers Salone pilgrims


President Ernest Koroma has congratulated some 672 Sierra Leonean pilgrims for successfully completing this years hajj rites in the holy land of Mecca. His congratulatory message was delivered to the pilgrims by the Chairman of 2010 Hajj Mission Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray and Sierra Leones Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia H.E Wusu B. Munu at the holy site of Mina over the weekend. Similar appreciation was also extended to the custodian of the two holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz al- Saud and his government for the excellent facilities and arrangements put in place for use by the pilgrims.


120 cases for ACC


Media reports point out that the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) presently has one hundred and twenty actionable case files. The ACC Commissioner Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara is reported to have advanced that almost all the cases have been investigated of which the institution now has the onus of pressing charges against.


Iranian parliamentarians rap Salones speaker


According to news, a delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran headed by Dr. Hussen past Thursday 18th November 2010 hanged heads with the Speaker of the Sierra Leone Parliament, Abel Stronge at Committee Room No1., House of Parliament, Tower Hill, Freetown. The visiting Iranian parliamentarians are said to have signed a memorandum of understanding with officials of Sierra Leone - Iran Friendship Group. Speaker Abel Stronge at the occasion noted the importance of the visit and expressed Sierra Leones readiness to strengthen an already formidable bilateral relation between the two countries.
