Dogs on the Rampage in Freetown


Local tabloids have disclosed that there are so many dogs parading the streets of Freetown without owners. According to reports, most of these dogs are dirty, wild, and ill and could easily transfer the disease to human beings. Residents are reportedly blaming the Freetown City Council for making neglect over sanity.


Workers Blast Mines Union

 

Reports have alleged that mining communities and workers in Bo, Moyamba and Bonthe Districts are currently perturbed with mining companies for not meeting their corporate social responsibilities. According to reports, there are poor conditions of service, poor medical facilities and other related human rights abuse case at mining sites at Gondama Village and other mining sites. Reports alleged that the Mine Workers Union (MWU) is doing nothing to remedy the situation an allegation they have denied.


50 Students Complete Agricultural Training

 

50 Students from Wellington Orphanage School at Wellington in Freetown have recently completed five- day training at the Njala University Campus, Moyamba District. According to reports the aim of the training was to equip the students to choose agriculture as a career and to benefit from it. The training was said to have been facilitated by the Okholahoma University in America in collaboration with his Healing Helping Hands International Ministries.


Thief Beaten to Death


Local tabloids have disclosed the death of a young man who is said to have been captured by residents at Leicester Road in Sumaila Town for stealing. According to reports the deceased was chased by residents of Sumaila Town last Sunday after stealing some football wares that are said to be the property of one community member. The area reports say has been suffering from rampant stealing and the police have been accused of being ineffective in their operations.


30,000 People to be Tested for HIV

 

The National HIV/AIDS Secretariat (AIDS) has targeted to test 30,000 people in Sierra Leone from November 26 to December 2 2010. This will be done to observe the 2010 World Aids Day. World Aids Day provides an opportunity for all individuals, communities and political leaders to take action and ensure that human rights are protected and global target for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care are met. The theme for this years celebration is Universal Access and Human Right NAS is said to have lined up activities to observe the day all aimed at reducing the virus.


WAICA Ends Conference in Salone

 

The West Africa Insurance Company Association (WAICA) an institution formed to promote cooperation among insurers in West Africa has ended its educational conference in Freetown. The two-day conference which started on Monday 22nd November at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex in Kington Freetown ended on 23rd November 2010.  The President of Sierra Leone Insurance Association and Managing Director of the Reliance  Insurance Trust Corporation Limited Mrs  Alice Onomake is reported as saying that hosting the conference in Sierra Leone was as a result of the contribution the country has made towards the success of WAICA. The theme for the conference was Globalization and its Effects on the West African Insurance Industry.


SAFE Ends Human Trafficking Seminar


Social Action for Human Empowerment (SAFE) in collaboration with the UNDP and Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST) has concluded a one-day refreshers training of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) right and human trafficking for its staff. The UNDPs rule of law and civil society advisor Elvise Eroh-Tanyi said the aim of the training was to refresh the minds of human rights activists on laws that cover human beings. He said they are planning to expand their activities to the provinces to ensure that the laws are practiced effectively.
