More Disabled Students to Grab DST Scholarship


The Dorothy Springer Trust a registered UK Charity with a vision to empower disabled people in Sierra Leone to support them through skilled employment is planning to offer its second batch of scholarship in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The Founder of DST, Dr. Abdulai Dumbuya is reported as saying that the 2011 scholarship is a build up on the successes of the 2009/2010 sponsorship programme in which DST provided a comprehensive scholarship package to three disabled Sierra Leoneans to undergo advance training in ICT.


NaCSA Commissions Health, Agric Facilities in Koinadugu


The National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) over the weekend commissioned three projects aimed at promoting agriculture and improving the wellbeing of the people in Koinadugu District. According to reports, the projects include livestock paddock in Gbindi, a rice-mill in Sinkunia and a community health post in Koindukuna Chiefdom. The Paramount Chief Mansa Salifu Mansaray is said to have expressed gratitude to the government through NaCSA for improving access to health in the chiefdom.


IG to Promote Senior Officers


The long awaited promotions for Senior Police Officers (SPOS) will be finally released by the Inspector General of Police before the 25th December 2010, local tabloids have claimed. The said promotion reports say will range from Inspector to Assistant Superintendent of Police, Assistant Superintendent to Superintendent. Four senior officers who are currently acting as Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) will also be confirmed. The said police promotion reports say will be strictly on merit and performance.


Disability Sojas Complain RSLAF


It has been reportedly revealed that 311 chronically ill, mentally-ill and wounded in-action recently complained the RSLAF for deliberately refusing to pay their benefit. The sympathetic group in their letter of complaint disclosed that they have exploited all quarters to get their benefit but all proved futile. The letter was addressed to the Ombudsman, Human Rights Commission and many other stakeholders.


Oil Companies Eye Sierra Leone


Local tabloids have it that a Spanish Energy Company Repsol recently discovered a 135 foot pay of light crude oil in an exploration well off the coast of Sierra Leone. Repsol started the exploration in 2003 and last year discovered major gas deposits. The company is now determining the financial viability of the oil.


Sierra Leone Loses $ 150 M to Illicit Fishing


Reports have alleged that Sierra Leone is loosing a chunk sum of $ 150 Million annually in illicit fishing activities. It is alleged that officials of the fishing ministry are conniving with illicit fishermen to evade the payment of tax. Reports say most of the fishing vessels are not registered. The erstwhile minister of Fisheries , Haja Afsatu Kabba fell while fighting this battle to ensure that all fishing boats are registered.
