National Chairman of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peopleís Party (SLPP), John Oponjo Benjamin, has said in Freetown that the All Peopleís Congress (APC) government is inconsistent and economical with the truth.
He made this disclosure in a telephone interview with the Awareness Times Newspaper on Thursday 25th November 2010 whilst deliberating on the refusal of the government to heed to an earlier assurance that it was going to denounce the Kono violence.
The official government spokesman, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo assured Sierra Leoneans on Wednesday 24th¬†November 2010, through national radio that Ďthe APC government will come out with a statement tomorrow, Thursday 25th¬†November 2010í.
When contacted yesterday by the Awareness Times Newspaper to verify whether the government has issued out the press statement as promised, Minister I.B Kargbo responded thus: ďWe will come out with the statement tomorrow, Friday, before 11amĒ.
ďThis is a typical example to substantiate that the APC government is not committed towards addressing an issue that has the propensity of disrupting development,Ē Benjamin pointed out, adding: ďA country marred by violence will never developĒ.
The APC, he continued, should not look at the Kono violence as an isolated issue, especially when such attacks are led by their supporter, Adamu. ďThe SLPP members and offices have been subjected to countless attacks by APC thugs,Ē Benjamin disclosed.
He said the refusal of the government to denounce violence and dissociate themselves from thugs has rendered the police impotent.
ďThe police are scared to arrest Adamu because of the latterís closeness and connections with the powers that be,Ē he disclosed, adding that society must not allow such reckless development to thrive unabated, especially at a time like this when we are fast approaching elections.
The APC, he said, must genuinely dissociate itself from all forms of violence so as not to allow the present situation to deteriorate to a level where it can no longer be managed.
Benjamin emphasized that it is not in the interest of the APC to discuss and ratify the budget all by themselves, as according to him, members of the international community who funds a vital part of the budget are monitoring the situation and would not fund a faulty budget.
ďThey have to convince the international community that the exercise of ratifying the budget was credible.
He assured that as a responsible opposition, they will continue to highlight the incompetence and violence tendencies of the APC government until corrective measures are taken.
