Ombudsman calls for Respect


The ombudsman of Sierra Leone Justice Edmond Cowan has disclosed that most government Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAS) are not treating his office with the respect it deserves. According to Edmond Cowan, these MDAs are always failing to comply with complaint letters sent to them from the Ombudsman Office thereby making his work very difficult. Mr. Cowan is said to have made this statement at the usual press briefing held by the Ministry of Information and Communication. He is said to have outlined some of his institutions achievements and challenges which they experienced this year.


HIV/AIDS Secretariat to Close Down


The APC Members of Parliament of Constituency 35 is said to have called on different stakeholders for the speedy transformation of HIV/AIDS Secretariat to HIV/AIDS Commission. Hon. Marie Jalloh during the debate in parliament is said to have reminded his colleagues MPS that the current mandate of the HIV/AIDS Secretariat in Sierra Leone will end this year. She therefore suggested that it will be wise to transform the secretariat to a commission where the work of the AIDS Programnme will become broader and handled fully by the Commission.


Minister Promotes Health


The Minister of Information and Communication Ibrahim Ben Kargbo has recently embarked on a massive exercise of medicinal tree planting and distribution. This exercise is a means of promoting the health of Sierra Leoneans through the leaves and roots of a medicinal tree called Moringa. The moringa tree is known to have healing powers and can cure up to 300 different diseases. According to experts, the leaves of the Moringa tree can cure all types of ailments when the leaves are boiled  and the extract taken internally.


Mabeseneh Hospital Rescues Teenage Boy


The Saint John of God Catholic Hospital commonly called Mabeseneh in Lunsar in the Port Loko District has successfully facilitated the overseas operation of a sixteen year old boy who was suffering from an ailment diagnosed as Lumba-Sacral Tumor commonly known as growth. The surgery is said to have been done in their sister hospital St. John of God Catholic Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. The hospital Director   Bro. Peter L Dawoh disclosed that they came in contact with the boy when their outreach team visited a village in the Marampa Chiefdom on an awareness raising programme for the free health care beneficiaries to make use of the free medical facilities in the hospital.


Jealous Husband Murders Wife for Phone Call


Reports are abound that last week in Freetown one Zainab Kanneh met her untimely demise when her husband, Yaryah murdered her in cool  blood out of jealousy that arose from the deceased receiving a phone call from a yet to be identified caller. The police at Ross Road are investigating.

 

NRA Employee Spends 4 Days behind Bars


Reports have it that an employee of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Sheku Kaikai was released past Saturday 27th November this year after spending four days at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) cell in Freetown for allegedly leaking sensitive documents belonging to the institution. Reports say Kaikai is suspected to have been leaking NRA documents to local press houses causing his superiors being under spot lights.


Freetown Rotary Club Empowers 22 Pupils


The Rotary Club of Freetown is said to have awarded in total 22 Junior Secondary School pupils from 11 institutions within the Freetown Municipality with Scholarships to the tone of over Le 8Million .According to the Chairman of Rotarys Scholarship Committee, Dr. Sheku Tejan Kamara, the scholarship which covers tuition fees and uniforms among others for each recipients is expected to be expended for two academic years.


SSL Pockets Le 3.4B for Household Survey


For the impending Sierra Leone Household Survey (SLIHS) which is expected to kick off in January 2011 the Statistics Sierra Leone has been financed with Le 3.4 Billion, local media reports advanced. This is said to have been revealed by Ahmed Saybon Kanu in the provinces last week while addressing Council Chairmen and Councilors. SLIHS National Coordinator, Jinnah Jusu Ngobeh says SLIHS 2011 would provide an important pool of information on socio-economic issues like health, education, energy and plenty more.


Actor to Sell Salones 50th Independence Celebrations


Award winning Actor Jeffrey Wright has consented to serve as Sierra Leones peace ambassador at large ahead of the countrys 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations on 27th April next year, says a local newspaper. According to the reports Wright registered his agreement at  a ceremony held in New York past Sunday 21st November at the Tribeca Cinema Manhattan, where he was unveiled to hundreds of attendees.
