A newly launched Community Based Organization (CBO), De Generals, which is based at Juba Hill in Freetown, has over the weekend, disclosed plans to transform their community into a standard community.

Officially launching the organization on Sunday 28th November 2010 at the Serry Kamal Hall in Juba Hill, Freetown, the Honorable Member of Parliament (MP) for Constituency 112 Salamatu Turay congratulated the youths for setting up such a focused youths development organization in no less an area than Juba Hill; a place initially considered to be for the rich people. She said youths have the moral responsibility to serve as agents of change and development in any community. Hon. Turay used the forum as an opportunity to admonish the youths against bad practices such as drug abuse, prostitution, robbery, and violence among others, while encouraging them to design projects for the development of the Juba Hill Community which is now densely populated and fast expanding. She however vowed support for the community and promised to promote the organizations aims and objectives.

Members of De Generals posed with Dignitories

The Chairman of the ceremony, Councilor Ibrahim Kabba-Kamara aka Small Borbor said until youths are respected and honored in society, no country will acquire development, adding that in Sierra Leone, youths suffer the most during the countrys decade long war and that in fighting for development, they should not be neglected. Councilor Kabba commended members of De Generals for their brilliant initiative in coming together to develop their community, while cautioning them not to allow themselves to be used by evil minded and misguided politicians.

Giving an overview of the organization, the Secretary General for De Generals Aruna Turay thanked his audience for gracing the launching. He said De Generals is a Community Based Organization (CBO) formed by focus-minded youths of the Juba Hill Community. He said their focus is to transform the Juba Hill Community to a standard community by providing basic social amenities for the community people. Mr. Turay cited that some ten years ago, Juba Hill was a community for the elites living in highly secured fence houses. But that rapid migration due to the rebel incursion into the city, the community has now been densely populated with poor and underprivileged people and as a result, some basic facilities such as water and electricity supplies, health, and other amenities have fallen short in the community. According to the Secretary General, residents are now suffering from lack of adequate pipe-borne water, health facilities, market place, and recreational center, among others. He said with the formation of the CBO De Generals, their priority is to reinstate all these facilities and make the Juba Hill Community a standard community again. Mr. Turay used this forum as an opportunity to call on well-to-do residents of Juba Hill and Sierra Leone as a whole, and donors to help the youths in achieving their set goals.

The Head of Communication and Media in the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ibrahim Samura called on the youths to be pace setters. He admonished them not to copy the footpath of those who established social clubs or organizations for cultic purposes. The ASP went on that he had been attending clubs and organizational launchings but that the aims and objectives of De Generals are worthy of emulation. He called on members of De Generals to be law abiding at all times.
