The Chief Executive Officer of the Union Trust Bank, Mr. James Sanpha Koroma has, on behalf of his family, last Sunday November 28th 2010, donated the whopping sum of Five Million Leones instantly to the Fundraising efforts of the Harford Old Girls Association (HOGA). The association, which has elected Mrs. Annie Koroma, the wife of Mr. Sanpha Koroma as their new National President, is seeking to raise a lot of money from willing donors in order to take care of the mammoth needs of the school in the wake of the civil war that all but destroyed the school’s infrastructural fabric but certainly not the will and determination of the products of the worthy school located in Southern Sierra Leone.

The donation from the James Sanpha Koroma family was made during this year’s 110th Anniversary celebrations of the school that saw celebrated Old Girls like the first female Chief Justice of Sierra Leone join other members of HOGA to celebrate the school’s 110th Anniversary at Moyamba Town in the Moyamba District, southern Sierra Leone.

The celebrations commenced on Thursday 25th November 2010 and ended on Sunday 28th November 2010. Series of events including picnic, reminiscence night, flag raising, fund raising, award of certificates of merits, traditional dancing, church service, match past, election of new HOGA executive, and cracking of jokes, form part of the celebrations.

The events attracted HOGA members from all over the world as well as important personalities like the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Minkailu Bah, Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Soccoh Kabia, Resident Minister South, Musa Tarawallie, Master & Registrar of the High Court, Mr. Elwyn Bailor, Mr. Sanpha Koroma and several Honourable Members of Parliament (MPs).

The Sunday thanksgiving service was held at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Moyamba on the theme: “Celebrating the Goodness of God”.

Rev. Dr. Emmanuel S.J Pewa, in his sermon, said the goodness of God include knowledge, greatness, power and many others. Members of HOGA, school pupils and guests prayed fervently to God for more blessings.

A March Past procession was held following the church service and the grand procession through the streets of Moyamba was led by the country’s Honourable Chief Justice, Her Lady Umu Hawa Tejan Jalloh.

Meanwhile, HOGA has the wife of Mr. James Sanpha Koroma, Mrs. Annie Koroma, as the new National President whilst new executive members are Mrs. Rose Marie Jalloh, Vice President, Mrs. Kadie Dizo-Kamara Social Secretary, Aminata Fofanah Vice Secretary, Alimatu Ibrahim Treasurer and celebrated female journalist Manjia Balema-Samba is now the new National Publicity Secretary.

In her statement, the new National President of HOGA, Mrs. Annie Koroma, promised to re-establish the HOGA branches at Makeni, Magburaka and Port Loko/Lunsar.

“Since the war ended, our branches have not been functional but with our current enthusiasm all of these branches would be reactivated,” she emphasized adding that her executive will do all it can to refurbish the school’s general hall, dining hall, chapel, dormitory and other facilities.

The new Publicity Secretary Manjia Balema-Samba spoke to Awareness Times after the event and expressed immense pride that their school has now set the record of producing the first ever female parliamentarian, the first ever female Government Cabinet Minister and the first ever female Chief Justice. The school, she said, has a very ideal education environment and boarding home and all it needs now was to get the support of willing donors to ensure the school’s infrastructure and services were not only restored back to its days of glory but that they were modernized with necessary additions like high speed Internet access and high-tech Computer Labs.
