HIV/ADIS 5-Year Plan Launched
The President Ernest Bai Koroma has on the 1st December 2010 officially launched the National HIV/AIDS Strategy Plan 2011-2015 at the Miatta Conference Centre Youyi Building in Freetown. The President who is also chairman of the National Aids Council is said to have expressed thanks and appreciation to staff and management of the National Aids Secretariat and the people of Sierra Leone for the concerted efforts and commitment in the fight against the deadly epidemic. He also commended the International donor partners for their support to the fight against the disease.
ACC Urged to Fast Track Cases
The Civil Society Organizations have called upon the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to fast track investigations and prosecution of matters currently under investigation. The call is said to have been made during a-two day validation workshop organized in Bo Southern Sierra Leone. Representatives of Civil Society Monitoring Groups urged the ACC to leave no stone unturned but to set up pertinent investigations and prosecution as required adding that delays in handling sensitive and delicate state matters can be dangerous.
Plan Boosts Peripheral Health Units
With support from the European Union, Plan Sierra Leone has provided 11 microscopes and other laboratory equipment to 11 peripheral health units in 11 chiefdoms in the Port Loko District. The cost of each microscope is said to be about Fifteen Million Leones. The plan Port Loko Unit Manager Mustapha Kai Swarray is reported as saying that the laboratory equipment are to capacitate the health unit so that cases of malaria will be diagnosed and appropriate treatment administered. He admonished the health workers to handle the equipment with care so that it can be used for a long time.
BBC Rates Salone High
The Presenter for the British Broadcasting Corporation BBC’S popular global forum “World Have Your Say” on Tuesday 30th November 2010 disclosed that Sierra Leone is still among the first 10 most regular participants a cross the world. Ros Atkins said Sierra Leone is among the top 10 countries in the whole world that participate in their programme. He is in Sierra Leone to promote World Have Your Say.
Freetown Hosts Sustainable Reintegration Seminar
Sierra Leone is hosting a two day workshop on “Strategies and lessons learnt on sustainable reintegration and job creation. The workshop which is expected to start today is jointly organized by the government of Austria and the United Nations Peace Building Support Office in New York (PBSO). The workshop will serve as a platform to discuss successful strategies and programmes capable of creating jobs in West African countries. Participants are said to have been drawn from government institutions, private sector, civil society and social entrepreneurs among others.
Parliament Discusses Disability Bill
The Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs on Monday 29th November 2010 organized a pre-legislative meeting for parliamentarians to discuss the bill entitled, ‘The persons with Disability Act 2010". The Bill is reported to have been tabled yesterday for approval by parliament .According to reports, a good number of disabled persons in the country were in attendance to rally round parliamentarians to enact the bill into law. Chairman of the legislative committee in parliament, Hon. Emmanuel Ajibola Manley Spaine is said to have described the bill as very important as the physically challenged needed to be cared for.
Salone Envoy Pays Courtesy Call on DSRSG in Liberia
Sierra Leone Ambassador to the Republic of Liberia Rev Dr. Mrs. Marie Jilo Barnett has paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Recovery and Governance (DSRSG), Ambassador Moustapha Soumare at his Pan African Plaza Office, Tubman Boulevard in Monrovia. Ambassador Barnett noted that she was happy to have made it possible to return courtesies to Ambassador Sowmare, pointing out that as an active gender campaigner she intends to focus more on women, children, peace and security.
