London Mining Company Sierra Leone on 2nd December 2010 commenced regional consultation and disclosure meetings on the Environmental, Social   Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA).

It all started at the CCSL Hall in Freetown and later reached Port Loko District Council Hall in Port Loko, northern Sierra Leone.

Chief Operation Officer, London Mining Company, Mr. Luciano Ramus said the company was founded in 2005. “London Mining has worked in several countries across the world but Sierra Leone is more important to the company as a result of the great investment it has in the country,” he explained.

The regional tour, he continued, is aimed at educating and giving the general populace an opportunity to make valuable inputs with regards environmental impact of mining.

He therefore appealed to participants to take the meetings seriously and make salient contributions on the report.

He assured that the company will continue to provide jobs for Sierra Leoneans, especially those living in the mining areas.

Consultant of the Report, Dr. Franklyn Bashir, explained the environmental social health impact assessment report page by page to the people and encouraged them to ask questions and make recommendations.

He stressed that the operations of London Mining will increase income in the country.

“London Mining will improve on the country’s standard of education through the provision of regular scholarships as part of the company’s corporate social responsibilities,” he explained.

Mr. Bashir furthered that the host communities stand to benefit a lot from the operations of the company. “Irrespective of this fact, the communities must not forget that the company would be engaging in mining activities that will subsequently lead to numerous challenges,” he said, but allied the fears of the people that London Mining is doing it best to minimize such challenges.

Regent Chief of Maforki Chiefdom, Pa Alimamy Kamara, commended the government of Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma for the strides in ensuring mining companies start operations in the country. He furthered that this was an opportunity they have been longing for, and expressed happiness that it is finally here.
