In Torpkombu section of Kailahun town on Bendu Road imposingly stands the Luawa Resort Hotel, built by an illustrious son of the soil, Maya Kaikai.

Perched on a piece of high ground overlooking the war-ravaged town, the plush facility is situated 34 miles from the international market at Koindu, 17 miles from Bendu and 2 and 7 miles respectively from the two pristine beaches on the Guinean border.

The project started in December last year and is expected to be completed next month when the hotel will be formally opened although it is already in use.

Luawa Resort Hotel offers an array of splendid facilities that make its cherished guests feel at home away from home. These are contained in the variety of rooms available.

Self-contained single bedrooms have TV and standing fan while double bedrooms are fully air conditioned and fitted with water heater and flat screen TV.

There are seven executive bedrooms, each having internet facility, DSTV, water heater and balcony. The VIP Suit, though, has two verandas, a living room, 32 inches flat screen TV, water heater, two air conditioners, two toilets and internet facility.

Sandwiched between the well ventilated African bar overlooking the forest and the VIP Suit is a spacious, fully air conditioned, fabulous restaurant that is complete with a luxury bar and DSTV. The African Bar is in the centre of a beautiful African garden with rows of neatly manicured flowers that exude sweet scent. Beach umbrellas are erected to protect guests from the scorching sun and pelting rain.

In the immediate left of the main entrance to the hotel stands the 300 person capacity Kailahun Friendship Hall which hosts seminars, conferences, workshops and disco services, among others. Further down is a gym equipped with assorted gym accessories.

Work is meanwhile ongoing on a mini mart and a mini beach within the compound that would be completed with sand and comfortable relaxing chairs.

The availability of a 40KVA generator guarantees electricity daily from 7pm to 7 am while water supply is on a 24 hour basis. The hotel has its own water supply mechanism with water sourced from a hand-dug well and reservoir. A leister sub-massive machine pumps water straight into the three tanks (5,000, 2,000 and 1,000 liters respectively) which then send water to all the facilities.

The hotel also has catering services that prepare all types of dishes – African and Western – even those not available in Freetown such as pemahun, served in the morning.

Mr. Kaikai told this medium in an exclusive interview that the project was borne out of the desire to provide decent accommodation to dignitaries, government and NGO officers on various development undertakings in the district.

He said he emulated renowned entrepreneur Wilfred Sam King whom he worked with as Construction Manager for four years. “I just thought I should make my people benefit from the expertise especially when we had no such facility in the entire district before,” he underscored.

He explained that while in the diamond business some years back he acquired a lot of assets some of which he disposed off and used others as collateral to raise the money for the project.

Asked about additional privileges guests will enjoy when they check into the hotel, the proprietor stated that they will get access to the natural beach at Mofindoh village, have opportunity to view historic mountains like the Mamba Hills, the historic Kailahun Court Barray, the historic Slaughter House, the beautiful stones at Dodo Kortuma, see Guinea physically two miles from Kailahun, see fresh agricultural products like cacao, coffee and palm kernel as well as extraordinary fruits.

Mr. Kaikai disclosed plans for expansion across the swamp at the back of the hotel where he said he intends constructing real estate in response to the accommodation needs of his people. He said the houses would be paid for on monthly or yearly basis and later mortgaged to interested persons within 15 to 40 years span.

He said he would start designing the real estate once the hotel is complete. According to him, the process will involve consultations with the people as to what the structures should look and advertisement on massive billboards to generate interest from residents. This will be followed by sensitization on the design and mode of construction. The estate, he went on, will contain a clinic, market square, religious houses, mini shops and other institutions that will help enhance the lives of the people.

Mr. Kaikai thanked Rokel Commercial Bank for both their managerial support to the venture and emergency interventions whenever the need arises.

He also paid glowing tributes to NGO personnel, government functionaries, diplomats, traditional leaders and the Kailahun people for their patronage, wishing them all a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

His special thanks however went to His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma whom he said advertised the hotel to the outside world in series of interviews. Among prominent dignitaries who have been guests of Luawa Resort Hotel are President Ernest Korom. He had dinner there from 10:00pm to 10:00am during his recent visit to the district.

The President was so amazed at the ambience and service delivery that he personally invited the proprietor along with his family to State House to thank him for the bold initiative, an invitation that has since been honoured.

Other eminent personalities that have passed nights at the hotel include U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone His Excellency Michael Owen who patted the proprietor on the back for a job well done, IFAD boss, DFID boss, Country Directors of Plan International and Save the Children, World Bank Road Consultant working with SLRA, cabinet ministers, parliamentarians and numerous distinguished personalities in society.
