Young Generation Youth Leader of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), Ishmael Bangura, has been duly elected President of the first executive for the All Political Parties Youth Association (APPYA).

This happened on Saturday 5th December 2010 in Makeni during the associations first delegates convention which was graced by President Ernest Bai Koroma, UN officials and other stakeholders.

Bangura was nominated by the out-gone interim president of the association cum Young Generation Leader of the SLPP, Malaam Janneh.

The convention which was organized by the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) with funds from UN was geared towards involving youths of various political parties to preach the message of non-violence to their colleagues, and to make amendments to the associations constitution.

Assuring the youth of his governments commitment to ensuring violence free elections in the country, His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma expressed his gratitude to the various youth groups for taking the responsibility to preach political tolerance to their colleagues. He said it is a demonstration of their total involvement and commitment in combating violence and the consolidation of peace. As youths you should be seen in quelling riots and to resist misuse during party campaign to fight or to disturb the peace of the country, he entreated, saying peace can only be sustained when youths are willing for it.

The president assured the youth of his governments total commitment and support to the various party youths, stating that his government has denounced violence and that the aspirations of youths for peace and non violence would be achieved through support from his government.

On behalf of the UN Family, ERSG Michael von der Schulenburg described the youth as pace setters who have done exceptional job as being the first youth group in the world to establish Political Parties Youth Association. The ERSG advised youths to ensure that the issue of Ivory Coast does not happen here, noting that there is no democracy without opposition. Sierra Leone is considered a success story. Though there are many problems to solve, but considering what we have achieved in 8 year after the war, we are making progress, he observed.  He disclosed that he has traveled the length and breath of the country without envisaging any problems. There are no political prisoners, less human rights abuses, low crime rates as compared to neighboring countries and no more peace keepers, he stressed. He assured the youth of UNs total support towards their initiatives.

The UN Ambassador from Australian, Irene Frevdenschvss congratulated the party youths for their initiative towards the formation of the association. She assured them of carrying the message to his people in Australia that youths in Sierra Leone have taken the responsibility of politics and non violence campaign in their hands. She ended by pleading with the youth to work in the interest of the country.
