50 Police Vehicles Missing


Over Fifty vehicles and motor bikes of the SLP are said to have got missing without any proper explanation from the authorities in charge. The current acting Director of the SLP’S Transport Department Supt Gibril M Turay was in the provinces recently to assess the current  situation of the vehicles and the operations of the Transport Department in that part of the country. The repot of Supt Turay had revealed that the missing vehicles and motor bikes in the provinces could not be accounted for by the officers in charge. Members of the Executive Management Board (EMB) are said to be currently pursing the report and are expected to come out with recommendations for the recovery of the missing vehicles and motor bikes.


Gunshot Panics Worshippers


Local tabloids have alleged that, worshippers of the Winners Chapel were gripped with panic past Thursday when a gun shot was heard at the security post opposite PWD leading to the Pademba Road Maximum Prison in Freetown. It was revealed that the gun was mistakenly fired by one of the night guards who were on duty at the post. The officer in charge of the post Inspector M Conteh denied the involvement of any of his personnel. with regards   the firing incident.  However, there was no incidence of death or injury.

 

3 Remanded in Custody


Magistrate Johannes O Wellington of Freetown Magistrate Court NO.2 last Friday remanded accused Kelfala Conteh, Kelfala Tarawally and Musa Coker who were charged on three counts of assault, threatening language, public insult and provocation. The particulars of offence revealed that on 7th December 2010 at Hill Station the accused confronted the complainant  Madam Kadijah Sesay and insulted as well as threatening her. The accused pleaded not guilty. After a long argument between the prosecutions and defence lawyers, the presiding magistrate sent the accused to the Pademba Road Maximum Prison and matter is expected to come up today.


Education Ministry Suspends Congress School


Reports have alleged that the Director of Physical Education under the purview of the Ministry of Education Mr. Sahid Conteh recently suspended the Sierra Leone Muslim Congress Secondary School in Freetown. According to reports, the school was suspended from participating in all games and sports activities organized by the Ministry. A letter written to the principal reportedly disclosed that the decision was not unconnected with the rowdy conduct and violence perpetrated by pupils of the school during the just concluded inter- secondary school football competition at the Brima Attouga Mini Stadium in Freetown. Reports state that the decision is in line with the national rules and regulations governing institutional competition organize by the ministry.


Rotary Club Donates to Counterpart in Sierra Leone


Reports have it that a team of Rotary Club of Nyon of Lacote in Switzerland recently handed over two separate cheques worth 142,200 United State Dollars to their colleague rotarians in Sierra Leone. The money was handed over by the head of team, Candid Peyer at the Wusum Hotel Makeni. Peyer reportedly informed that, the money which is meant to finance the Magbenteh Community Hospital in Makeni was donated by the Rotary Club from Nyon La Cote and their district local and Rotary Foundation in the USA. 


UPF Certifies Peace Ambassadors


The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Sierra Leone Chapter on Saturday certified students from various secondary schools as Peace Ambassadors. They were certified under the UPF Character Education Institutive Plot Project for secondary schools. Their role is to spread the message of peace and non violence in their different schools and form peace clubs. The theme of the ceremony was “Developing Students to realize their potential through character education series”.

Police Named Most Corrupt Institution


The Sierra Leone Police have again come under criticism as a result of a study of the institution. The study, National Corruption Survey, was sponsored by the British Department for International Development (DFID) to carryout a research into the activities of various public institutions. The report which is yet to be made public indicates that the force has to do more in order to achieve a “Force for Good” in an effort to mitigate injustice in society. According to researchers, the police, followed by the judiciary are very high on the list.


Criminal Procedure Bill Discussed


The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) with support from the Justice Sector Development Project (JSDP) on Friday 10th December 2010 hosted a stakeholders meeting to discuses the draft Criminal Procedure Bill at Njala Venue in Freetown. Various representatives within the criminal justice system including Judges, Magistrate, Police and Lawyers discussed proposal for new criminal procedure law. The existing laws in Sierra Leone spanning 45 years are no longer able to meet the needs of the twenty first century legal environment. The new law is said to being designed to grapple with the increasing complex and difficult cases that are now being tried.


Education Minister Assures Kamabai


The Minister of Education Science and Technology Dr. Minkailu Bah have assured parents and pupils of the Kamabai Secondary School of government continued commitment towards the development of education in Sierra Leon. Dr. Bah is said to have made the statement past Friday during the commissioning and handing over ceremony of the newly constructed five classroom building of the Kamabai Secondary School. The construction of the five classroom building was funded by descendants of the Kamabai residents in the United States of America. The Minister called on the pupils to make good use of the opportunity provided for them.
