SLPP Campaign Heats Up

Aspirants in the flagbearer contest of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) are bracing up for the party’s forthcoming delegates’ conference slated for March 5, 2011 in Freetown.

Already, tensions are mounting among supporters of the twenty-three aspirants as their various leaders launch their campaigns and complete the fifty million registration fee.

Most of the aspirants are presently on provincial tours, whilst others have already completed theirs.

One of the aspirants, Usman Boie Kamara is all set to formally launch his campaign in Freetown tomorrow, Saturday 18th instant.

Kamara has assured that the people of Freetown, who he said do not vote on sentiments but mainly on issues and achievements of given political parties or individuals, will in 2012 vote en masse for the SLPP. He has also boasted that he would demonstrate his popularity in Freetown and the country as a whole come Saturday. “I will paint Freetown green on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, the popularity of Usman Boie Kamara has seemingly made supporters of other candidates jittery. They see his popularity as threat to the success of their candidates, hence the tension. But Boie is a peace loving politician who has always entreated on his supporters to remain tolerant and accommodating even in the face of intimidations and other forms of bigotry.

However, other popular candidates like former NPRC leader, Julius Maada Bio, has said in a telephone interview with the Awareness Times last evening that there was no cause for his supporters to get panic, and that the race is a family affair in the name of the SLPP to get to State House in 2012. He however used the forum as an opportunity to strictly warn his supporters against any act of disruption and violence. For him, his major focus as at now is to convince the delegates of his ‘capability’ to lead the SLPP in the 2012 elections. “I may not even formally launch my campaign in Freetown since my major target for now is reaching the delegates; launching of campaigns is for the mere sake of merry making,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, another leading aspirant in the contest, Dr. Alpha Tejan Wurie is expected to complete the payment of his candidature fee today at the SLPP headquarters in Freetown. He will be the seventh candidate to pay the remaining fee of Le40m, all 23 candidates having earlier made a commitment fee of Le 10m each. On the whole each candidate will part with Le 50m non-refundable fee to vie for that coveted position. As one of the most likable aspirants, Dr. Wurie’s payment ceremony is sure to be graced by a multitude, both from the SLPP membership and supporters, including admirers.
