Lands Ministry Embezzles $1m
Senior civil servants in the Ministry of Lands have reportedly connived with some top government officials to embezzle the sum of one million dollars in the ministry. Local tabloids say the funds in question were from the Investment Climate Facility (ICF). The funds were reportedly secured by the government one year ago for the lands registration programme. The alleged embezzlement of such funds has put the scheme in jeopardy.
Gov’t to Issue Bonds
A one day consultative stakeholders’ forum on developing an issuance strategy for medium and long term government bonds has ended in Freetown. The conference organized by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and the Bank of Sierra Leone attracted various stakeholders in the financial sector. The forum was aimed at informing the stakeholders of the government’s readiness for issuing medium to long term bonds; to articulate the need for government bond issuance and to solicit the views of stakeholders towards this financing approach.
Lands Minister Must Apologize
President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Umaru Fofana is said to have insisted that the Minister of Lands, Allieu Pat-Sowe must apologise to four journalists for ordering their arrest on Monday. According to the SLAJ President, the journalists had done nothing to warrant their arrest and detention. Fofana has threatened that SLAJ will take up the matter legally if the minister fails to tender an unreserved apology.
Housewife Raped by Five Men
Vigilant youths of the Madina Community along Wilkinson Road are said to have arrested two out of the five men accused of gang raping a twenty six years old housewife. The lady was reportedly raped on the night of past Thursday while her husband was yet to return from night work. The rapists also do away with valuables worth millions of leones. It was the loud scream of the lady that alerted the neighbors who stormed the residence and succeeded in arresting two of the rapists.
America Supports $100,000 Projects in Salone
Representatives from fourteen different organizations and institutions across the country have each signed a project agreement with the United States Embassy. The projects, according to local tabloids, would be supported by the American government. Funds for the six projects under the first program will reportedly finance the construction of classrooms, school furniture, bridges and drying floors. The total amount for is estimated at one hundred thousand dollars.
NDA Gets New Flagbearer
A Sierra Leonean based in the United States of America has reportedly expressed his desire to represent the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the forthcoming Presidential election. Mohamed C. Bah made this disclosure at Fourah Bay College in Freetown during a presentation organized by the students wing of the party last week.
