The remains of two able bodied youths were on Sunday 19th December 2010 discovered laying stark naked on the sand at the Lumley/Aberdeen beach in Freetown after being missing since Friday 17th December 2010. The corpses were later identified by their family members as Hassan Kargbo and Peter Wilson both being students and residents of Kenema who came to Freetown on holiday.
According to Mr. Ibrahim Sesay, a beach warden who witnessed the scene, the two guys had been in the beach playing football with other colleagues since 4:00pm on Friday. He said after the match, Hassan went to the sea side to clean off the sand from his body when he was accidentally drifted away by the heavy tide into the deep sea. He furthered that as the victim was struggling to save his life, his friend Peter rushed into the sea to rescue him from drowning but was not experienced enough in swimming and as a result, the two friends met their untimely death. Mr. Sesay stated that all attempts to rescue the two guys proved futile as they were both drifted away by the heavy tide. Mr. Sesay went on that the police, community people, family members and friends mounted a search operation for their remains but to no avail not until when they re-surfaced on Sunday dead.
The mother of Hassan, Mrs. Mariatu Kargbo told this reporter that her son was a final year university student who was expected to complete his course next year.
Meanwhile, the remains of the two friends were conveyed to the mortuary of the Connaught Hospital ahead of funeral arrangements.
