Martilie International Celebrates 5th Anniversary

The Martilie International School located at Hill Station in Freetown on Thursday 16TH December 2010 celebrated its fifth annual prize giving and thanksgiving ceremony at their school compound. The school is believed to be one of the best schools in the country as it offers quality education, evident in the performance of pupils in 2009/2010 National Primary School Examination (NPSE). Prizes were given to intelligent, honest and well behaved pupils as well as deserving teaching and non-teaching staff members.

Kosovo Thanks Sierra Leone

A Goodwill Ambassador from Kosovo James Brisha is said to be currently in Sierra Leone to thank the people and the government of Sierra Leone for recognizing his country’s independence. According to reports, Kosovo was an autonomous province of Serbia and Montenegro but later attained independence on 17th February 2008. Mr. James Brisha is reported as saying that he has visited countries including Sierra Leone that have recognized their independence to extend their thanks and appreciation.

US Govt. Funds $ 135,000 Development Projects

The Government of the United States of America through its Ambassador in Sierra Leone Mr. Michael Owen has signed some One Hundred and Thirty five Thousand United States Dollars (USD 135,000) worth of projects for fourteen communities in both rural and urban areas in Sierra Leone .This development is meant to compliment US Government’s effort in ensuring peace building programmes, community development, restoring Fundamental Human Rights, education, democracy and good governance. Six of these grants are to support the small community based projects.

40 Students Receive Tegloma Scholarship

Tegloma Federation International, INC has on Thursday 16th December 2010 provided forty scholarships to five secondary schools across the country.The beneficiary schools include the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School in Freetown and Schelenka Secondary School in Port Loko among others .Tegloma Western Area Representative Coordinator Madam Bridget is reported as saying that the focus of her organization is to develop education in Sierra Leone by way of providing scholarship to needy and academic pupils that have proven excellence in their work.

Boost for Women Living With HIV

Women living with HIV and Regional Focal Points across the country have benefited from a one day Gender- Reproductive Training on Advocacy Capacity Development at the Imperial Hotel in Bo, Southern Sierra Leone. The training was organized by Society for Women and Aids in Africa Sierra Leone Chapter (SWAASL) in collaboration with UNFPA; UNAID, Voice of Women and other Partners. The programme Coordinator SWAASL Marie Benjamin is reported as saying that the training was designed to raise awareness and popularize the new National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan 2011-2015 for Sierra Leone

Deputy Leader Cautions Land Grabbers

The Deputy Leader of the All People’s Congress Party Hon. Victor Chukuma Johnson has cautioned land grabbers in the Western Area Rural District to desist forthwith from their nefarious practice or face the full force of the law. He is said to have expressed dismay over the manner in which state lands are being grabbed by ill motivated individuals in the country. He expressed similar dismay that there was no visual evidence of performance in terms of community development and promised to appraise the performance of councilors to keep the records straight. Hon. Johnson is said to have made these statements during a solidarity meeting with his constituents in Waterloo recently.

Salone Heads UN Mission

Kington Papie Rhodes has been re-elected by the UN General Assembly to serve his second four-year term as chairman of the International Civil Service Commission with the rank of Undersecretary General of the United Nations. Rhodes who is a native of Sierra Leone said it was a privilege for him to serve a unique organization like the UN which serves the world community in mostly peacekeeping functions and also development.

City Council Workers to take Oath of Secrecy

Local news reports say all staff members within the Freetown City Council including the Mayor will soon take an oath of secrecy. The essence of the oath is to ensure that staff members do not leak to the public internal issues. According to reports, a good number of staff are not willing to take the oath and are planning to boycott the process. The issue of oath taking reports say was not part of the agreement of staff members and that they are not civil servants. Management is said to have issued a swarning that anyone who fails to adhere to the new policy would have himself to blame.
