A major portion of one of the biggest communities in Freetown, Wellington, situated in the eastern part of the city, is presently marred by total darkness which is as a result of lack of electricity supply (blackout).
It has been learnt that the trouble of the community is not because the National Power Authority (NPA) fails to provide electricity supply to that part of the country, but it is due to the wicked and unpatriotic activities of cable and transformer thieves.
These unscrupulous people who recently embarked on massive dismantling and escaping with NPA cables and transformers have succeeded in wrecking the operations of the NPA in that part of the country.
For the past several months now, a significant stretch of Wellington has been without electricity supply, with several other areas joining the blackout trend as the thieves continue their activities.
This situation has affected the social and economic lives of the people in that part of the country. A good number of residents have told the Awareness Times that they depend on electricity supply for their livelihoods, as most of their business equipment including freezers, have no use without electricity.
The residents are calling on the National Power Authority (NPA) and other relevant authorities including the police to come to their aid.
Senior officials at the National Power Authority have assured that the plight of the Wellington people is being seriously considered.
