Chairman and Leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), John Oponjo Benjamin (JOB) has made a call for the promotion of one of the key ideals of the SLPP in the country-National Unity.

Speaking during the laying out ceremony of the Kambia District Young Generation Leader of the SLPP, Francis Foday Kamara, on Wednesday 19th January, 2011 John Benjamin explained that Clause 3(ix) of the SLPP constitution shows one of the aims and objectives of the SLPP is to “Unify all ethnic groups in Sierra Leone”. He added that the ‘One People, One Country’ ideology set by the forefathers of the SLPP remains in force.

Chairman Benjamin led a high powered delegation from the Freetown headquarters of the SLPP to pay last respect to Francis Kamara, who died on Wednesday 12th January 2011 in Kambia, northern Sierra Leone.

At the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kambia, Benjamin pointed out that the late man was a strong pillar of the party, always at the forefront of propagating the SLPP unity message in not only Kambia District but the country as a whole.

“Francis was a Limba who was just as hard working inside the SLPP as any of our other members belonging to the Mende, Temne, Loko, Fula, Madingo, Kissi, Sherbro, Creole or any of the other Sierra Leonean ethnic groups,” the SLPP Leader emphasized. He said Kambia District is very important to SLPP as it is one of the districts where the Palm Tree party sprouted from.

“This is why the late Francis was so dear to us, especially as he had been so hard working in efforts to propagate SLPP’s unity message here to the youths. We will really, really miss him,” JOB noted.

Benjamin emphasized that it is important for all Sierra Leoneans, irrespective of tribe or region, to respect the unity ideology of the SLPP. Chairman Benjamin consoled the bereaved family to accept the loss as the will of God.

In response to JOB’s tribute, bereaved family members extended high appreciation for the respect demonstrated by the SLPP to their late relative.

Makeni based Catholic priest and brother of the late man, Father Kamara, described the move by the ‘famous’ SLPP Leader and Chairman to lead a high powered delegation to Kambia to pay final respect to Francis as laudable.

Other members of JOB’s entourage included the party’s National Treasurer Joe Kallon, one of the party’s eastern district trustees, Haja Memunatu Koroma, Dr. John
Karimu and the National Secretary of the party, Jacob Jusu Saffa. These strong SLPP members met up with northern regional executive members from Makeni and Kambia.

The commitment of the SLPP to the tenet of ‘One People, One Country was demonstr
ated in the funeral ceremony of Francis Kamara which was graced by party members from the north, east, south and west of the country.

The late SLPP strongman was finally laid to rest at the Catholic Cemetery in Kambia.
