President of the Republic of Sierra Leone has left the shores of the country for the United States of America (USA). This was confirmed to the Awareness Times by the Acting Minister of Information and Communications, Sheka Tarawallie.

Ernest Bai Koroma, in the company of Information and Communications Minister, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo and Foreign Minister J.B Dauda, yesterday Tuesday 25th January 2011, joined a high-powered ECOWAS delegation on a mission to address President of the United States of America (USA), Barack Obama, and the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on the situation in Ivory Coast.

Presidents of Mali and Sierra Leone, Amadou Toure and Ernest Bai Koroma respectively, Nigerias Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia, Nigerias Ambassador, Prof. Ade Adefuye and ECOWAS Director of Political Affairs to the United States, Dr. Jonas Hemou, were recently nominated for the mission to New York and Washington D.C.

Ernest Koroma was nominated by the Chairman of ECOWAS cum President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.

Sierra Leones Acting Information and Communications Minister, Sheka Tarawallie, told the Awareness Times yesterday that ECOWAS delegation is expected to update the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and the American government on the efforts made so far.

ECOWAS is also seeking a U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing the use of force in Ivory Coast to remove the defiant Laurent Gbagbo, who has refused to step down for the internationally acclaimed winner of the presidential election, Allansane Quatarra.

Ernest Bai Koroma was also part of the mission dispatched by ECOWAS to Ivory Coast to explore the prospects of reaching a pacific agreement on the manner in which power could be ceded to the duly elected President.

All three visits of the ECOWAS mission to Ivory Coast were fruitless.

While waiting for an opportunity to resume further initiatives in this direction, I have thought it fit to update our partners, particularly the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council on the efforts made so far by ECOWAS and any further actions in the matter, ECOWAS Chairman Goodluck Jonathan disclosed.

It has been learnt that ECOWAS is dispatching other delegations to France and the United Kingdom and China, India and Russia respectively, on similar missions.

However, Sierra Leones Chief of Defence Staff, Robert Yira Koroma has told the BBC that Sierra Leone has pledged 120 troops to unseat Laurent Gbagbo in Ivory Coast.
